A real man's sport
« on: November 26, 2007, 09:41:46 PM »
I hope I never live where winters are long enough to make this sound like a good idea.

Do they really have organized sidecar ice racing?

I started bleeding just looking at this auction.

You should go spend time in Manitoba.  Then you'll see what passes for winter motorsports.

The seller of that outfit is in Leicester, Mass.  Not exactly the deep long winters one would expect for that item.

I have a similar hack platform for my cb750.. we ran it on a dirt oval a few times.

I would just love to get it out on the ice, but I blew er up!!

The plan is though to go to Bonneville in sidecar class. You can run a passenger (if you can find one) or a 134lb or + weight. My buddy that did run it with me a few times passed on this spring.. bummer since we started riding together in the 70,s

i will try to dig up a pic of the hack..

I have DonetheTon quite a few times on several 750,s on the ice..lots of wheelies too.. even ran the Amen frame on the ice..

You guys could hook up near the Idaho border, and travel down together. If you go mid-winter, you could practice on the way to Bonneville.  ;)

Ice racing in cars and on solo bikes is a huge winter sport in northern Europe and across the French/Italian Alps, in fact the Trophee Andros is a very prestigious race series ;D  What Marc Duez (multiple champion) can do with 300+bhp and rear wheel drive/four wheel steering, on highly polished sheet ice, completely defies the laws of physics 8)

I've passengered on motorcross sidecar outfits in England before now, staying on them hurts in ways that have to be experienced to be believed :o   But I have to admit, Ice Sidecars is a new one on me, looks cool in an even more painful kinda way 8)

The guy on the yellow bike was at our vintage track.. he would spin...all the way around! He did say though he was surprised at how fast my 750 did go with a street tire on it, worn one at that!

When i built the hack, I thought it up on a Wed.. got some tubing bent on Thurday..started working on it Fri, all day Sat.. had it on the track on Sunday morning!! It worked fairly well, but I had no plans to go by, no real idea of wheelplacementof the third wheel, etc. Just looked at a pic or two of a roadracing one and built it...ran it on the left side of the bike..

Do they use heated grips?  ::)

How much whiskey do you need to drink?

Yes, and it's about the tires. Do-it-yourself with sheet metal screws will get you out and having fun but tires from a master tire builder  for the pro racers puts traction into another league. The grab on sidecars and the lean angles of the 2 wheelers has to be seen to be believed. In cold air, there is a peculiar unique tinkling/tearing sound  as spiked tires shred ice on 50mph corners. They're nuts ;D

I can give a bit of imput given im now part of a team thats running a brand new 07 Kymco Mongoose 250 sport quad. Our quad will be equipped with heated grips, seat and thumb warmer along with some sort of sleeve set up to go over the riders arms. The front suspension will be widened 4 inches to allow the bike to remain stable even when cranked over into a drift around the turns. It will also be equiped with at least two extra lights if not 5 extras along with a handle bar cam. Of course the tires will be studded for grip. Once we start building the quad i will make sure to get a ton of pics..

Heated grips are for Pussies...!! ::)

At 60 mph in Zero weather they will probably not keep your whole hand warm.

For RMS.. Try the Numb-Bum Rally at Fairview College in northern Alberta.. a 24 hour race on ice..

RMS = Real MANS SPORT ...

alway thought about trying it on an sohc4..

Man, I wish I had some ice here now, I'd put it in my Bourbon! Ah well, my morning coffee break is over, so back to work.................  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

HEEEYYYYYYYY !!!

We should form TEAM SOHC FORUMS..!!

I got my ice race frame and tank to contribute. Brilliant orange, half the steering stop cutoff, tank bashed in about the width of a fork tube to give lots of turning clearance to the right...

Maybe still have a tire..

HHMMMmmmmmm sounds like fun...
