CB550 Cafe project. It's ALIVE!!!
« on: December 02, 2007, 05:08:19 PM »
The PO had it stored in the back of his garage for 10 years with a full tank of gas (yup, lacquered something good too), I bought it for $100 and then bought a new house so time has been limited for the last year.  But I have been spending weeks undoing the 'rats nest' in the headlight (had a poorly installed Vetter), hooked up a battery and everything started to come to life.  The starter obviously had to come out for a cleaning and new brushes before it could turn the motor over, checked the points, spark in all cylinders.  Yahoooo, everything seems to be going pretty good so far.

The slides in the carbs are absolutely lacquered tight and a vigil of B12 wasn't helping, but eager as I have been to getting it on the street.  A can of starting fluid in a steady hand and it fired up right on the spot, and obviously without the slides moving, all I got was a surprisingly smooth steady idle.  With the tank off and drained I was able to find that no moisture or rust present, but a pretty even coat of old gas may have preserved it well.  I had hoped to get a dry run on it before tearing it down but the carbs are saying otherwise.

Finally bought a new camera this weekend after the old one croaked, I'll try adding pics of it but my still post moving mess of a garage is tight working space chaos.

If the slides are stuck, I'm surprised it ran at all :o

My bike came with 10 yr old gas and stuck slides but the mains and needles were all gummy and plugged as well. ;)

keep us posted...

Yeah, was hoping at least a fire on ether would be all I would get.  But I still filled up the carbs with good gas, if not to run on then to help loosen everything before cleaning.

When I got it home a year ago.

Hey look, the headlight barfed.

Little room to work, but the garage is coming together slowly.

And the tank that is sacrificing it's self (rear half) for a tail section. With the rear mount on the tank re-bent down and added to, the tail light fits in the end like it belonged there.

I'm trying the same tank-to-fender mod, I'd love to see how yours works out and what you do to fit it.  With mine I am considering using some of the seat pan as the tank section is just wider than the rear end of the seat pan.  I have to fit my tank and seat pan on before I can mount the rear fender so that they will all fit right.  Just curious, are you using a stock 500/550 tank?

The tank that my bike apparently came with is off a 77-78'(?), the other one I found at the salvage is from the same year and cheesed to the point of never holding fuel.  I am attaching it to the seat pan and fixing it to hold the electronics from the bike, battery is going to stay in the same place in a chrome box mounted center and sidways where the airbox is.

I am nearing the start of the tail mod, and will be posting pics on it as I go.
