Mike,

Is it easier or more difficult to port the 500 head vs. a 750 head?  It looks like you have to take a different approach with the 500 head.

On Thursday, I showed a local tuner what you did to my head via the pictures that I have and he was very impressed.  He then showed me so of his work.  He ported a head and then filled some of the transition areas with molten aluminum to fill the "gaps" and then ported it again.  It was a very clean job, but very time consuming according to him.  He builds racing heads for cars also.

Look similar to the 550 I ported last winter (guess I did it right!).

I widened the port and made two nice rounded "valleys" on either side of the valve guide, but I didn't put the "divider" on the leading edge. (the poor light makes it look like it, though):

The intake tubes look very familiar, too (before and after)...

(with the Jones tag on the pics, I could only wish the head belonged to me  ;D)

Lookin' good, Mike! (Would you be willing to hire an apprentice?)

Art...the smaller the port the more difficult most of the the time. A busa port is kinda fun.....it's big! That 500/550 has a huge intake guide boss that takes a lot of time to get all 4 ports even. I've always said it isn't hard getting 1 port the way you want it...it's getting the other 3 just like it.Anyway the 550 floor is nice....much, much better than the 750. The valve job on Bryan's head is mint especially with the extra cut on the lower part of the seat. Even the valves were great as they lapped up perfectly. I have a set of Kibblewhite springs to install and it will be go time.

hei M

that's some sexy shaped metal you are showing. What stage would that be? I've seen you didnt touch much the guides.

+ doesnt the 550 head have the nice 15 deg chamfer on the edge as the 500? That's a very useful feature that I used to build some squish area.

find that strange as the 550 and 500 are supposed to have same valve size, no?

Cheers

That's some nice work Mike, The 836 engine in my K1 is a real "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" with your beautifully engineered stage 3 head, I just can't believe the difference between that engine and my stock K0, it's scary fast!

I'm still playing with the needle position in the 29mm CR carbs, (which are brilliant, 2 screws and the needles are out, how easy is that?!) and trying to get used to the noise from the 5 thou valve clearances recommended for the Megacycle 125/75 cam, but it's getting close, and man, does it fly!

How about you do a photo-article on how to port a head Mike, as much as I'd love to have you build all my heads, I can't afford it, and worse, can't afford the airmail now that USPS won't ship internationally via "Surface Mail", but I'd love to have a crack at doing my own heads? I'm particularly interested in the tools and equipment I'll need to shape those ports into "Mike-like" works of art! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Mike, its about time you asked for some money!!!! and i will do my best to afford the machining for the block ASAP and build the beast.
Plan is a webcam 58A with a 605 kit and a thin copper head gasket and, if i can get it inspected, a piper 4 into 1.

Terry, go back and look in my 550 porting post. I showed some of the tools I used. I found the hardest part was finding the tiny 3/8" sanding flap wheels needed to smooth down the ports after using the cutting bits to hog out most of the metal. A Dremel Moto-Tool will be your waepon of choice, unless you have a pneumatic pencil grinder (those can get mighty cold after prolonged use). A set of needle or moldmaker's files is also handy. You also have to be careful not to nick the valve seats (unless you have a valve seat cutter...)

I've had 2 1972 500's before this one I have now. These are among my all-time favorite bikes, but I've never ridden one "built". Cammed, piped, and big-bore yes, but not ported and larger carbs.

I ask this question in relation to the CB750. The difference in the 750 is absolutely day and night - one is docile and doesn't do much exciting while the other rips and snorts - lifts the front under throttle and has nothing in common with the stocker.

How does the 500 do? With the 500's higher rpm potential (shorter stroke, lighter pistons, ect). I could see myself doing a 500 project down the road.

I want to follow this project so please keep us posted.

Steve, No 36 is now in the new garage next to the new house and i actualy undid some bolts yesterday!---only cos i needed the washers mind!!! and no that one will be as close as i can get it to standard,
the head mike is doing is for a "dream" project i have had in my head for years---starts with a red frame and swing arm; alloy Koni's; alloy rims with twin disc and as many "goodies" as I can afford or find cheap
