Handlebar switches
« on: December 10, 2007, 05:33:16 AM »
Are CB400F handlebar switches the same as CB550F switches?? I'd like to put the CB 400f bars on my CB550F, and the donor has a much better set of switches.

Good question that I can't answer. Best/easiest way to determine this is to cross reference this info in a site like ServiceHonda.com or BikeBandit.com for an exact match. I'm in the same situation with my 75 750F. I picked up a new right switch but a new left is unavailable. I'd like to bet that another switch is identical as far as the switch itself goes but has different length wires or perhaps different connectors that could be altered to work.

Is there anyone out there that has switches for different years/models of the same bikes that can provide some comparison info pertaining to this? This could be useful info we could add to FAQ, etc.

I've got both 500 and 550K switches on my 500K1. no real differences, just some extra wires and redundancy with headlight switches being on both pods.

I don't know the answer to your question, but what I can tell you is that the wires on the "F" bike are longer because they connect in the electrical box on the down tubes. If I were looking for that switch, (and was willing to extend the wires) first place I would look is '75- '76 K models. I'm guessing same switch, shorter wires.

Hope this helps.

Dennis or anyone else with a 75 -76K that has a spare left control not on a bike,

-OR- for that matter, anyone that has a spare from any 750 with the same switches that knows for sure what bike it came from originally:

How about a measurement of the length of the wiring harness from the control body? We're talking turn signals, horn, and hi-lo light switch on the 75 750F. Only 1 different colored wire between the F and the 75-76K. Mine has all bullet connectors. Please indicate the wire colors and length plus the type of connectors your's has.

In looking at the David Silver site, it looks like both switches have the same part number, which kinda makes some sense; no need making a variety when the same switch will do for both. I would think that any harness differences (lengthwise) would be made up in the main harness, and not the switch portion. Of course, I don't want to confuse a good story with facts, either.

Ralt,

Check out the thread "Amazing parts list resource". It has more search options. I had mentioned Service Honda. You can do a cross reference on that site and see all the bikes a particular part is used on. Very useful.

You could also check the wiring schematics of both bikes. That should give you and indication if can swap switches or not.

My 750 is also a '75 F, so I can see exactly what you can on your bike. I don't have any spare switches.  I did not bother to check the wiring diagrams but I am a little bit surprised that there is a different wire on the '75-'76 K models. Sorry that I couldn't have been more help.
