Its a total rush lighting one of those monsters up. Friend of mine had a detuned funny car motor mounted in a 69 Charger R/T when it was running on race fuel it was making around 1300 Hp and on Nitro injection it was tuned up to 2000 HP..anything over that and we were expecting the body to just rip to shreads..it was straining pretty damn good with 2k and this is a heavily braced stock body with a 12 point cage and subframe bracing. 4 link rear end. Im well aware that these engines are capable of far more just speaking from my experience from being around that charger. The entire reason the car was built was because he got bored of his GTX that was making 975 Hp...scared himself silly the first time he launched it..

I had the pleasure of riding shotgun in this car: http://www.geminitime.com/index.htm

It is making over 1000 HP.  The launch off the line had me pinned to the seat, it was awesome!

That Barracuda is quite a machine Sparty! 8) I can well imagine that it was an Awesome ride. While I've never had the pleasure of a ride in a race car, I did go for an exciting ride in a buddy's 68' Coronet R/T once. I'd been in his car lots of times but, one day he asked,"Have you ever tried to count telephone poles at 150mph?" Of course I said "No" and he nailed it. He had a 440 Magnum setup to run with Dual Quads and THAT motor was no snail! So, I can only imagine what the effect on you would be in a race car!

To give you an idea of what I felt, look at the times that car runs.  http://www.rbrresults.com/beaversprings/results.cfm?driver=21921&class=99&track=223

I was in it for a pass that was just a tick over 9 secs.

Notice how the times come down as the weather and track began to cool.

Bill,

That ain't the half of it.  John, the owner of the car and shop, bracket races that car.  It actually will go faster but he has it detune so that he can find a class to compete in.  Two years ago the car ran in the low 8's! but there wasn't enough competition locally. His time was something like 8.3 @ 176 MPH.

8.3! I remember when AA Fuel Rail jobs were in that range :D
Over lots of years, I've watched ETs come way on down for all the classes. Haven't kept up with drag racing in several years now, so I'm no sure what the average times and speeds are now. To give you an idea how long it's been, Joe Amato, Connie Kalitta's son (can't remember his name), Kenny Bernstein, Gene Snow (probably was close to retirement), Eddie Hill, Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney Just naming some rail drivers from back in time. Gene Snow and Shirley Muldowney drove Funny Cars before that though!

That's a bit like saying the motor in your bike is 150 pounds of dead weight, killing the lb/hp ratio.
The blower takes 500HP and adds 5000... not a bad deal. The drive belt looks ridiculously large, but in racing you don't add unnecessary weight... it's actually running well over rated load and they do fail regularly.

Bodi, I cant agree more.. I would not care if a blower on my bike took 120 hp to run and left me with 150.. if I start with 75hp.

Of course  we look at our 7/8 full glass and say its nearly full and other say it is part empty...

I think some like negativity..

Don't remember exactly. I do know that she had a Plymouth Satellite bodied funny car (about a 71' I think) back in that period. She raced AA/Fuel after, not sure about before the funny car. My memory isn't clear on it and besides being from that period of time AND having seen the movie and I still can't remember for sure! :-\ Somewhere, I've got at least one magazine with pictures of her Plymouth funny car and her (Car Craft) They used to put pictures of the funny cars in some of the car magazines at the beginning of racing season. 8) ;)

                                Later on, Bill :)  ;)

BTW, here's a link that tells the story.

I saw Shirley at Sears Point back in '90 or '91 and she was driving a long, pink Top Fueler. She was semi-retired at that point I guess and she was 1 of only 2 TF cars at the event (can't recall who the other guy was right now). Nostalgia drags i think it was. I have pics but they're buried in the basement.  :-\
