Topic: Stupid ol Coot!

Well The morning of fun was cut short for me and my daughters.  We have three model rockets that we got from the hobby store over the last few years.  We fired each one once out in the middle of a huge field then some ol nut comes over screaming and shouting at us.  "I hope you have your name address and insurance policy on those things!" "Those are illegal fire works and if one burns down my house I'll sue you!"  I told him I didn't think I was breaking the law but when he went and wrote down my license plate # I figured it was time to pack up and go.  The cops havn't shown up so I suppose all is fine but I'll call them before I do it again.

I didn't have to check your profile to see that you were somewhere in the USA. It seems like there's 3 ways to get rich nowadays:
1. Win the lottery
2. Win a lawsuit
3. Work hard, work smart

Most people in the US prefer 1 and 2.

Now now don't just go lumping all us Yankees into the lazy, spiteful litigious gambling hopeless/hopeful category.  They're just the losers that make the news.

However I do agree that Political Correctness gave rise to a lot of lawsuits that wouldn't get beyond the courtroom doors in other countries.  I do admit that common sense should have more gravity here than it does.

I know you didn't mean MOST people but I have to defend us workers over here, you understand.

I'm pretty sure most people in the U.S. work on average more hours than any one else.  Well maybee not third world sweat shops.

Sometimes I think it would be great to get sued for somthing ;ike burning down someone's house with a model rocket and really get cleaned out. Then I wouldn' t need any excuses why I spend the whole day in the shed with my motorcycle. Oh, I'm sorry, I do that anyway!

I'm in the US. I think it's sad that people in our country will threaten someone with a lawsuit instead of talking to them to find out what they are doing.

And yes, we work. A lot.

The point is that if anything goes wrong in our lives, the first thing that comes to mind is who we can blame, and how we can sue them. And it's getting worse. Think about all of the frivilous lawsuits that we hear about weekly. People actually tried to sue McDonalds for making them fat! Can you deny that there is a problem with litigation in the US?

20 years ago, a 5 year old neighbor of mine fell into another neighbor's pool and drowned. There were no lawsuits, no criminal charges, just a neighborhood full of sad and regretful feelings. If that happened today there would be lawsuits and counter-lawsuits. Everyone would be pointing fingers and placing blame, trying to get rich off of misfortune.

OK. I realize this is the open forum, but it is the SOHC4 website so I should probably keep my political and social commentary to myself

Without meaning to add too much to this thread, it would seem to me that there must be some reason why boards with a significant US population has the tendancy to come round to this kind of stuff on a regular basis.

There are good lawyers and bad lawyers just as there are good doctors and bad doctors, good mechanics and bad mechanics (I’m personally acquainted with this latter category  ). At the heart of frivolous lawsuits are juries who make ridiculous judgments and exorbitant awards. Somehow they can’t connect the dots and realize how this affects the cost of things they buy and the insurance rates they pay. It’s the juries that make this fruitful for attorneys. I’m still waiting for the first lawsuit against Nokia or Motorola for causing some fool’s accident.

The concept of going after someone's "deep pockets" is quite irritating. It is our collective pocket that pays the price everytime there is a lawsuit with increased premiums and more expensive products/services. In the next town over there was a drug dealer shot dead by police. Arguably, it probably could have been handled better, but the city lost a 10 million dollar verdict and now all the taxpayers in that town have to pay towards a bond fund that was created to pay the debt. I bet some of those jurors are even having to pay! I thought it was the perfect example of how we shoot ourselves in the feet.
