Best times on a SOHC motorcycle?
« on: December 04, 2007, 06:02:20 PM »
We have all had them (I hope!)....where we are out riding our bikes and we think to ourselves...."I dont want to be anywhere else right now - this is it!" or something to that effect....do you recall one of these moments?

One of mine was riding up the Devils Highway from Mazatlan to Durango, Mexico...never knowing what was the round the next tropical vegetation covered-bend as I was overtaking the oil tanker moving slowly up the mountain...ah the rush..the thrill....that was a great beer that night  ;)

Anyone else?

cheers
Andy

Got divorced in 1985, bought a new Honda 650 Nighthawk and put 50 miles on it and then hit the highway and redlined the first four gears. Motor didn't blow so I went home, packed and rode to Pigeon Forge and back to northwest Indiana in 8 days and almost 2200 miles round trip. Not sure where all I went but didn't care, just a lot of good miles of riding and some serious soul searching.
I don't need another divorce but a good ride sure would be nice. ;D ;D

There were several on my SOHC.
"Back in the day" I was working at a small Honda dealership in a tiny town in eastern Arkansas. I bought the first CB750F in the area. I installed 400F handlebars, a slip-on exhaust canister (can't remember the brand) for the factory 4-into-1, and re-jetted the carbs accordingly and installed new Dunlops.
A friend of mine rode a water buffalo (Suzuki GT750) and we had many "contests" to see which bike and rider could make it from one side of town to the other first.
I would do something to my CB and he would do something else to his GT to try to keep up.
Poor guy. I really hate to see a friend humilated. That 2-stroker just couldn't quite keep up with my CB. Where are you today Donny Dotson???????? ;D I'd love to see you again.
There was also a guy that had a new  BOSS 302 that was winning all his races with the cars he was racing, but he was scared to race me and my CB SuperSport. He could probably beat me in a quarter-mile (and of course top-end) but he had "heard" about my 750 and was always reluctant to give me a run.
Man I loved those days. It didn't matter if you had the fastest bike or not.

Everything depended upon how well you could bench race!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

In 78 I think, I built an Amen Saviour 750. Took the whole motor apart, repainted it, new main and rod bearings, I guess 1st over pistons.

Anyway fresh bike and I had a wiring problem due to a bad diagram in a Clymer manual, melted a few coils.  But after 2 or 3 weeks I had it sorted out.

So I went on a trip for about a month, California first,  Big Sur for a week, then LA & went into Mexico for an afternoon without the bike.  Rode around LA for a bit more, then headed for Sturgis.. another week then back up to Canada.

After I got that initial wiring screwup sorted and left, I put 5000 miles on it in a month, on a  fresh bike that I pretty well assembled myself. It was a great time, but there were many, many more to follow..
