I had mine Hydro Blasted and they look brand new. It's non abrasive. Although I'm not sure if the bright aluminum was how they were originally. You can see all the photos in my project build thread:

I used soda on the bodies then polished the rest.

Harbor Freight sells a soda blaster for $100. I got the 10# kit and it works great. Blasted my carbs with it and they look brand new now. A 50# bag of soda was around 40 bucks. I am now blasting everything I take off the bike with it. Takes all the grime off without the hours of scrubbing.

I like to give my carbs a good verbal blasting every now and then.

Seems to help.

Don't bead blast your carbs like I did (in the pics above) soda blast them. The beads will get into all your air passages and are impossible to remove, without drilling out the pressed in air jets at the rear of the carbs, and somehow finding replacements.

The carbs in the pics above made my bike run like crap and I couldn't work out what was wrong until Hondaman stepped in and told me what I'd done. Botttom line is that soda just dissolves in water, the glass bead method will ruin your carbs. Cheers, Terry. ;)

Theory is walnut shells arent as good at stripping gunk and tarnish, but it will. Bead glass will have forensic remains that will inbed  and be in the motor. That is the choices when it comes to blasting.

Here's how my carbs and engine came out after soda blasting, it leaves a perfect finish for painting.

I used the home brew soda blast method and pleased with the results.  Here's a before and after.

I do not blast any of my carbs. After a solid wash with a brush and white spirits or similar, I rinse in water and dry off with compressed air. Then I put the carbhouse in a plastic box and spray it with a liquid containing 10-30% phosphoric acid. Same stuff you use rinsing the walls in your shower. Rubbing a little with a finger some places. It will foam up. Turn it around during the process, and a little liquid as possible inside the housing.

Only 2-3 minutes will do it. Rins in cold water and dry with compressed air. It will be nice as new and no beads to worry about. Some says that the liquid do harm to the bodies, but 2-3 minutes is in my opinion no problem. This process also give a result that does not look too far from original new. I am not after having them more glossy than orignal new.

I don't know how many I have worked on, it is many. Not one of them have got ultrasonic treatment, and all works great. Usually I only clean the brass parts and reuses them, some times they are too bad to be cleaned well. Always new gaskets and o-rings. Floatbowl and other items get a good polish, sometimes sanding is necessary.

My carbs may have been better than average when I start to work on them, though.

I've unfortunately not had as great of results with soda, but I'm guessing that's been user error.
Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems like with a good thorough cleaning after, I should be able to bead blast the carb bodies and still get them back together and working.

Yes, with careful attention I have no doubt that carbs could be and have been cleaned with beads and used without issue.

If you can somehow plug all the passages in your carb bodies, then bead blasting would be fine. Just how you're able to block them to ensure that not one bead got into a passage is another matter. I didn't plug anything assuming that I could just blow everything else out with compressed air afterwards, but I was wrong. They did look nice though...........  :-\

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well, while I think using beads could work, I chose to use soda, a decision largely based on what I read here in the forum. ;)

I just tried the home brewed soda blaster last night and it worked really well. Not perfect but for less then $10 in materials I can't complain at all. Well... It's dusty as hell without a cabinet or fan of some sort.
