what I do and don't need.
« on: July 25, 2005, 06:52:10 PM »
First let me say that I bought my scoot from my neighbor for a quick little dance and a slightly spoiled oven roaster (a chicken) and I have no plans for racing it. It sat behind his trailer under the rain gutter (he was using the gas tank to catch rain water), in direct sunlight and to the wind for about 25 1/2 years. Sense it was used so little I cant imagine that it will need much work to get it back on the road. And as I am sure you all know, I want to get my scoot running and performing better than new.

The rear tire has little cracks in it and it's gray and powdery on one side but it still holds air so it must be good. But just to be sure I went to wal*mart and bought this "green slime" stuff in the bicycle section. It says it stops leaks and you can't be too safe. The P.O. removed the front tire and put it in his front yard so he could plant some flowers in it. Now I can't beleive what some people are asking for tires these days. I dont think that they are what they say so I have come to the only logical conclusion. I will run on the rim until I am able to steal enough rubber bands to wrap around the rim, thus making my own tire. I guess I could even make them "low profile" tires all the kids talk about these days. Now the rubber bands that I am getting are from kinko's and only come in brown. I wanted black tires so here is my first question. Would you spray paint the bands with latex or enamal paint"  Also woould it be best to paint them on or off the rim? Any Ideas would be great.

This next idea some of you might want to use as I have not seen it in any posts as of yet. Some mice had made a home of the carbs and air filter so naturely I was going to rebuild them. I went to the junk yard to find the parts but I couldnt find what I was looking for. I was sure I would find everthing that I would need in the camero section. But i didnt come home empty handed. I found a steering wheel that only needed to be relaced and a rare shift knob (that I smuggled out in my pants).

Anyway, I just made a manifold out of pvc and garden hose. I duct taped it all together and attached a can of starting fluid to the end. It hasnt started yet but I think with a little TLC it will be a screamer. Anyone out there got any tips for me?

My daughter wants me to get a hemet but I say to hell with that. thats why god gave us skulls. But...I want her to be happy so my second question is...do you think its safe to use a plastic football helmet? I forgot to mention that I found that at the junk yard too. The guy behind the counter let me take it for a toke. I have never ridden a scoot before but, hell, how hard can it be? An that damn goverment always sticking their noses in our private business. If I fall I will just slide anyway. I think they are just puppets for the big business.

I dont plan on racing it. So I dont think I need to get all the High performance stuff...

I would just fill the tires with sand , it doesn`t leak out as fast as air and they would be run-flats.The old time leather football helmets are a lot more comfortable and also give you that dashing pilot look.Maybe there`s a way to make a giant mouse wheel where the engine is now and put the mice to work and just in case they`re lazy mice I would always carry around a spare engine like this smart guy ;D

Don't you think it would be a rather long winded job filling the tyres with sand?

I thought I invented it! It's a small world. As a result of a discussion on a sidecar site, I've started using WET sand in my sidecar wheel. It adds extra ballast and on a solo bike I'd imagine it would add stability by lowering the center of gravity.
The manifold is a typical newbie mistake. You should wrap it all in aluminium foil first, before taping. It really makes sense if you think about it.
I've just recently read that plastic offers more protection than fiberglass in a helmet. Nuff said there...
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

You can still get cheap tires called Cheng Shins.  They'll last even longer than the bike and perform just as well as sand filled tires.  As long as you don't ride on wet roads you should survive.

I have a back tube for ya, don't have to worry about putting the valve stem throught the hole, you can just put the valve stem in your pocket and when you need to blow up the tube you don't have to get off the bike ;D

I have a tank with holes in it.  You could ditch the manfold idea and just let the gas drip into the intake holes.  Or take a string and guide the gas in the intake holes.  Does the steering wheel have cruise control in it?  If you still have the mice you could relace the wheels to leave a little running track down the center, of course you will need to drill new holes in the rims.  Be sure to clean the plants out of the front wheel before you ride it.  As far as the helment you should wear one, but why not take advantage of the Darth Vader helmets that are on sale at Dollar Tree.  I have a Darth Maul with the horns but I spent the extra buck.  Dont by the Yoda one, the ears flap and drive you crazy over 30mph.  I have a mower deck off a wheel horse if you need any parts that might help this project!

Be cool
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Dont forget to carry a 2 foot 2x4 for extra brakin by jamming it between the headers and ground.  i wouldnt use the football helmet, you should just try one of them there classy cookin pots.  some people cut the handle off to make it more air-o-die-nam-ik, but then how are ya sposda cook yer soup?

My tank has holes in it too, if you want to fix it properly spend the extra dollar and buy some thick bin liners to put in the tank. If you pull a corner of the bin liner through where the fuel tap should be you can use a rubber band to make a tight fit to the fuel line. This will save you the price of a fuel tap, so you see a dollar more spent on a good bin liner is well spent. Oh, a rubber band to close off the top of the bin liner saves you having to scavenge a gas cap, which some punk would just lever off anyway. Remember, ride safe!

I saw a product on tv called "FLOM"  it is slime and styrofoam mixed.  You can shape it into 2 tires and never worry about flats, after a little road time you will pick up enough rubber that you will have real rubber tires!  You can change the tread pattern to match the road condtions too!  I was thinking anout the gas dripping into the heads, you might want to put a pan in the area normal carbs would go to catch the extra gas.  might want to get rid of extra weight, fenders, seat, grind the frame, brake system, guards and shields, oil tank and pump, Just put some oil in the crankcase and let it slop around, YOU CAN GET RID OF ALL THOSE EXTRA SPOKES TOO.

Wrapping your rusty spokes and exhaust in aluminium foil gives a neat chrome look, the difference is negligible if you stand 2 feet away from the bike. Wrapping your footy helmet in the same stuff will make you look like Captain America, brown shoe polish on the foil makes it look bronzed, while waterproofing at the same time.

As for safety equip:  I have a yellow firemans jacket and welding gloves I can throw in to the effort.

PS:  as far as the helmet, I said the Yoda style was bad for the ears flapping in speeds over 30 MPH, well the ears tear off at 53 MPH.  (just thought you might want to know.)

I just had a washing machine and hot water heater crap out on me so if any of those parts will help let me know.  (it's a 55 gallon water heater, that may be a bit much for a gas tank, but to each his own!)  I also found a idler arm I bought for my old Dodge but never put it on, it is your for the asking.

It sounds to me that your scoot will be just fine.If you put in the proper amount of tranny sauce and get your rear fender silencer adjusted right ...you'll be cruisin' in no time. Also .....please don't ever forget to add blinker fluid cause you just might cause a major accident!!
