A lot different from 1973 in Wagga NSW.
Ride to the local Police Station, the copper walks out, says "you're still alive, you can ride"
Then tells you to ride around the block whilst he's inside doing the paperwork.

I got my bike licence (restricted to 250 cc) in Cooktown Qld, I went to the police station and was told the sergeant that did the testing had knocked off and was at the pub having a meal, went up there and spoke to him about it and he got the barmaid to grab a six-pack from the fridge, he told me to take it around the block (about a kilometer), when i got back he opened one, he told me "If its a boy (foams up over the neck) you fail." i passed lol.
Then when i went for my pen licence in Cairns i got into an arguement with the tester, he said you should ride in the middle of the lane, i replied "So i should ride where cars and trucks dump all the oil and not in the tire tracks where the oil is scrubbed off the road?" i passed.

Its a great feeling when you pass the tests, and it doesnt get any less over the years when you get on that bike.
Cheers

I took the MSF for $50. Rode around in circles in the parking lot, doing some drills. Easy stuff. The instructor didnt flunk you unless you dropped your bike a couple of times going around the circle. After that, I tooke my certificate of compeltion down to the DMV, took the written test, passed, and got my endorsement after paying $15. It was pretty easy but I'd rather have not had to go down to the DMV.

Here in GA, it's $250 for the MSF.  A friend of mine took it and said it was pretty intensive, and you repeated everything until you had it down.  At the end, you have your license.

$399 plus taxes for the MSF up here!

I took it 2 years a go to get my M2. We actually have 3 levels of motorcycle licenses here. The first is the M1 which is just written and has a ton of restrictions (time of day, speeds, no passengers etc etc). Then you can take a course or do a ride test (that is where I took my course) and you get your M2 (far less restrictive basically the same as the full license but have to maintain a 0% alcohol level) and then you can get your full M license which has no restrictions. I will likely take another course to progress to that level. I will do the second course (another $400 and change!) because of two reasons...first it is actually easier to do it through them than the MTO (DMV) but also because I figure having an EXPERIENCED rider critique me for hours on end can only help me be safer out there...and I happen to want to see my 2 little girls grow up!!

I'd like to take it even though I have my license just to be a better rider.  It would pay for itself in insurance discounts over time. -About 10 years in my case.

On second thought, maybe some racing classes would be better.
