hello all,
have yanked the engine in order to replace the cam chain (a precautionary measure) and top end gaskets (oily leg).  bike runs great, very strong to 7K, mix is about right, 50mpg +/-, a fine ride.

ordered a manual and have been taking note of where everything is before taking stuff apart.  put #1 to tdc per the owners manual and found that the stamped lines on the cam are indeed horizontal but the machined notch is facing down.   ???    all the searches i have done show the notch should be facing up.  have rotated the crank clockwise multiple times and watched the intake of #1 just start to rise, then waited for the timing marks to arrive showing "T" and "F".  all appears correct except the notch position.  someone's been into the bike before, new gaskets everywhere.

#1 is on the left side, facing forward right?  am surely doing something embarrasingly stupid, but can't figure it out just yet. :P  any ideas?  many thanks!

But if you turn the crank one more turn (360 degrees) the notch will face up as the cam goes at half engine speed & will only turn 180 degrees.

yes, just did that.  the cam lines are now horizontal, the notch is facing up, the timing mark is at "T" of 1.4

guess the cam location for valve adjustment (how i did it first) is not the same as for cam timing (going another 360 degrees).  my first lesson from this project

now, if i move the crank just a bit cw or ccw, both valves just start to move.  i think this means that the exhaust cycle is just finishing and intake is just starting.

hope the set-up is in the manual, and thanks for the reply.

Remember that 1 & 4 rise together so that one of them is on compession and the other on exhaust
