Problem with my bike

I took the second voyage and had the rpm's up a bit on the newly built engine.  I have been completely unable to get into the garage to go over everything but I'm fearing the worst.  The bike was running strong but there was a bit off oil on the front edge of the cylinder cover gasket surface and some more white smoke.

After about 15 minutes of riding something happened and it started backfiring like mad, it was all I could do to get home.  I'm fearing something catastrophic as usual.  I'm planning on rechecking the timing, cam chain tension, and carbs but I'm thinking it's something deeper that may require pulling the motor. @#$@!Q#$@

backfiring... classic syndrome of point gap.. maybe
(at least it was with my Fiat X1/9..) lol

 Has your ignition plate slipped? I've forgotten to retighten the three mounting screws after setting timing on more than one occasion :P The screw on tips of my spark plugs have spun loose as well causing erratic spark to one or more cylinders.

  Can you pull the spark plugs and see if there is any tell tale signs of cylinders burning differently than the others? Do you have a compression tester to check that all cylinders have equal compression?

All good ideas and exactly what I was planning on doing.  The compression tester is coming from JC Whitney along with a timing light I ordered on Saturday.  Somehow my other light blew.  It's murder because I've had to take care of my baby since the episode (Saturday) and all I want to do is get out there and figure this out.

I got out there today to diagnose and it seems the timing light that replaced the timing light I blew wasn't working, which led me to believe I must not be getting spark on number 1 and I was right.  There is a problem with the timing and maybe even a blown coil.  The root cause appears to be the bolt that connects into the crank and holds the timing stuff is bent.  I bent it back and will have to retime when I get a chance but I'm happy about this problem as it could have been worse, way worse.

 I couldn't order the timing shaft through US Honda, but davidsilverspares had them and shipping from the UK was not expensive at all. I'd think you would want a new one rather than rebending the old one.

Yes I think so.  The headlight is strong and the battery is new and very well charged.  The bike runs but cylinder #1 and I'm guessing #4 also does not fire.  I'm running on #2&3.

I thought I checked but maybe I checked that other place, shaw hills or something.  I'll give them a shot, thanks.
