n00b in NoVa
« on: December 18, 2007, 08:46:46 AM »
Hi guys,

My name is Drew and I live in Centreville VA and have a Cafe'd out 1978 CB750K8 I  purchased off of Craigslist and I am spending the winter finishing it off. The bike is a strong runner and good looker and these days I am mainly working on bullet proofing it with stuff like all stainless bolts, braided steel oil, fuel and hydro lines, and probably an oil cooler. This is the 4th sohc Honda 4 I have owned in my life (71 and 74 CB750's and a 76 CB400) and I have had a smattering of other bikes (1967 Bonnie, 2 RD400's, H2 Kawi, 1000 Skirtster) but I keep coming back to the CB's :) .
I am a New York native and recently hit 40, have a wife and 2 kids, and manage a high end bicycle/triathlon shop for a living. I spent the 10 years before my kids came along working as an audio engineer touring with bands and shows, but now it's the staid suburban life for me.
Aside from motorcycles, I collect vintage road bicycles and Campagnolo components, and old school BMX bikes (20+ bikes all pre-1985). I think you can click the lil' web icon on the right to see my sadly outdated home page featuring some of my bikes and my podcast. I am also an avid record/music collector, and on again off again DJ/podcaster. Before the kids when I had more free time I also played drums/percussion and did some music production. These days there is little time for all my hobbys, so now whenever I get a free hour I either throw a leg over the CB, or if it is late/too cold/wet/snowy I hit the garage with a pint and wrench on it a bit.

I look forward to meeting people with the same passion for these great bikes, and I am sure I will learn quite a bit from you all as well.

Drew

welcome from SC. Im a fledgling taper and former frestyler as a kid. Had an 85 green master as my first real bike. Not one Id slowly put together. Id like another one but Hondas are usually cheaper.

Welcome from DC.

Campy components are practically works of art (especially the cranks).  Just wish I could have afforded them when I was riding...

Duster- I'll take yer K8 flack (for now.... >:( ) but so far so good on this one.

Dave- since you are a local boy, I would love to meet ya one day, any plans to attend the Dulles or DC bike shows? I should be at both. As far as the old Campy stuff goes, it is art, pure and simple. Aside from one current road bike I have, all of my roadies are Campy friction on the downtube, or classic campy pista stuff on my track bike. One more reason they just don't make 'em like they used to....

Bender-
I never was much of a freestyler, but I do have a few in the stable. I raced BMX from 1980-85, then started again around 2002, it's a blast, and hopefully it will be something I can do with my kids in another year or 2 (kids are 1.5 and 4). If I find a deal on a green Master, I will let ya know... I have quite a few connections/friends from my years of collecting so ya never know when one may show up :). Heck... I would happily trade you one if I had it for some Honda parts. I wish I hadn't sold my taping rig when I left NY... but I do have some good equipment still and lots of experience if you ever need advice.

Gerhead-
That railcycle thingee looks like a hoot, and your CB is bad@$$!
I am a long time bicycle mechanic (20+ years) and I have only seen one other modern railbike, though I have a Schwinn and hotrod collector friend with one from the early 1900's thats cool as heck, but more like a pedal car. With all the rails to trails conversions around here there must not be too many long stretches of abandoned track to play with that thing on anymore  :( .

bender,
My kids are 29 and 31 so you can see what happens when all of a sudden you have
too much time on your hands.

78CB,
I have located about 20 miles of unused rail in southern Maryland.
Most rail machines have at least 4-wheels, I think.
Mine may be the only 3-wheel electric.

These guys came up on me real fast !
