testing an engine out of the frame
« on: December 05, 2007, 08:03:28 PM »
With an engine out of the frame, how can I check it out to see if it runs? I have never bench tested an engine so this is new territory for me.

Obviously I need to set up a fuel source and have the battery hooked up, but what else?

Suggestions?

If it's not the 750, but the one in your avatar....

...add oil, battery to the points/coils, fuel to the carbs, and a fire extinguisher (or friend with a hose) nearby. The exhausts can actually spit fire without pipes. Noisy, but cool!   8)

Oh...make sure it's held down with something. The front of the engine likes to kick upward.

You need an oil tank connected. Otherwise, same story.

Wow, you sure jump to conclusions.

No, I am not saying what you think I said. I am most definitely buying the bike (engine and all). Then after it is home I would like to test the engine out.

(too bad it won't slide into the CB500 frame!)

If you have the frame I think it's less of a hassle to mount it than to rig a test bench.

That redneck dyno looks like the rig we set up to test run the V6 from my Ford Sierra before we put it back in the car ;D

We thought we were being smart strapping it down securely to the bench, but the vibrations made the whole bench walk off up the garage ::)  Which would have been OK, if it hadn't been running a high pressure pump for the fuel injection, you wouldn't believe how far a Bosch pump can throw fuel when you give it some freedom :o

Sometimes the stupidity I displayed in my youth astounds even me ::)

Based on my experience with that motor though, I can offer you a tip Greg, if you don't fit the exhaust, make sure you point the exhaust out of a doorway, either that or wear ear defenders and earplugs ;D

Im thinking the reason he wants to bench test it is so he can get an idea of the engines condition before fitting it into the frame only to find out it needs a rebuild and have to take it back out.

...have we forgotten the handy dandy $20 compression tester?   ::)  A compression test is gonna give you a pretty good idea on the condition of the internals...maybe better...

The reason I built the redneck dyno is: I have one cylinder of the four that is down some 60 lbs from where it should be and I was told that if it had not been run in a while to fire it up and run it. Seems there were several that think if I do this that cylinder may "heal" itself in time. Does anyone have anything further to add? I'm all hears! Don't want to open it up if I don't have to. nowhatimean!

Would you rather install an engine, get it running & insure it to test in, having only the compression numbers?

Or would you rather see it running and know whether it burns oil or not. then install it?
