Help advice w/how to remove
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:26:09 PM »
This is a vfr triple tree that I am installing on my 400.  I ordered new bearings and got tehm today, and thought I would switch everything out.  How do I remove the stem to put on the new dust cover.  pics attached.

Yeah I know, ask for a lot of help ::) ::)

Are you trying to remove the stem, or just the bearing race?

If you're removing the bearing race so you can put in new tapered roller bearings, you can cut off the old bearing race with a dremel - just be careful not to cut the steering stem.  If you dont want to cut it off, you can usually pound them off - work your way around the bearing with a hammer and punch/chisel and it will slowly move.  I'm not sure there is a non destructive way to remove those, as its too tight to get a bearing splitter in there.

Search thru the SOHC/4 forum for my thread on swapping out stock bearings for tapered roller bearings on my 78 750K8.

Might be helpful to you.

Might not.   :)

Good luck with it.

don't be afraid of pulling out the propane and torch heat the pieces.
