NHRA motorcycle helmet requirements
« on: December 21, 2007, 09:35:10 PM »
Looking for info. about helmets for drag raceing. The drag strip I talked to said they went by NHRA rules, but I can't find a copy on line unless I buy the whole rule book. Anybody got a book??

I dont have a book but when I raced at bandimere you needed a snell rated helmet at the time a 2000 but now most likely a 2005.  Also over the ankle boots leather or kevlar jacket and if over 120 mph full leathers.  When I started needed a lanyard but they got rid of that.  It vearies track to track and person to person on who tecks you in.

Snell A or Snell M?  They do have different ratings for automotive and motorcycle use.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

hmmmmm....... very interesting..........
Does your track have a website where the track rules are posted?
 Like....   http://www.madrasspeedway.com/minitruckscars.htm
"Alcohol cars require a SFI-5 rating. For Supers, Sportsman, Mini's and Jr.'s. fire suits, racing gloves, helmet, and window net 24x16" with top release welded to cage at bottom required. All helmets need to be 1990-newer snell approved or equivalent. Blood type on helmet recommended. Full face shield helmet, head cover, neck brace and nomex underwear recommended. For Sprints SFI-5 rating fire suit, racing gloves, racing shoes, full face shield helmet, neck brace, arm restraints and helmet net required. Nomex underwear and head cover recommended."...... Rule change for next year.... "For the 2008 race season- Supers, Sportsman, Mini's and Jr.'s. Full face shield helmets and racing shoes will be required."

Do you know anyone else who races there - that you could ask about the equipment?

I'm just guessing, but a quality M/C helmet of recent manufacture should get you by. The nomex-lined Snell SA rated shell is probably overkill, as you are not likely to be trapped inside a burning motorcycle.

A buddy gave me the firesuit and shoes, so I had some extra bucks for a good helmet.

After a year or so of not looking, I found a bike painted to match. :D

Good luck!
