Cafe seat for '78 750f

I know... I did a search but I thought I'd ask as well. :P
I just spoke to Glass from the Past and I'm thinking about buying a seat from 'em. They told me that their seats for the Nortons and Triumphs would probably fit, but he wasn't familiar with the frame differences between the K and F models. I'm not either!
Any words of advice? I'm now able to start tearing down and hopping up my Beloved Steel Steed as I've added an '04 Interceptor to my garage!

Brett is a solid dude. I have bought from GFTP before and it was always top notch service.

The frame differences with the K and the F as they relate to the seat are mainly in the mounting. The F's have a bolt on mount that allows the seat to open from the opposide side as 73-76K bikes. Since you are not going to use the hinges anyway in mounting a cafe seat (unless you get one of the ones with hinge provisions) it shouldn't matter. The big issue you have to watch out for is length, since the F tank is longer than a K tank.

the only seatpan i've seen of his that fits the 750 is a bit large and bulky for my tastes, but that's just me. his stuff is quality for sure though. my friend frank runs that one-- i'll see if i can find a picture. i think it would work better with an F tank, as it won't come foward far enough to meet the tank, and leaves the rear frame tabs (where the turn signals mount) exposed in an awkward way.

One of the things I like about this hobby is the fact that I am the chief engineer, designer, idea steeler, president, vice president, laborer..... I work in IT to earn real money and in such a job I have to answer to people above me.

In my garage I answer to no one. I am free to explore any possibility. I am free to tamper with things I know abolutely nothing about...

Lacing spoke wheels....     Tried it. had some failures. Now it's pretty much a piece of cake.

Painting....  Countless failures. Every failure reveals additional experience for the next time.

Complete seat restoration... I do fiberglass very freqently now. I still don't do upolstery...

Shade tree mechanic... I have no problem jumping into any engine. I may even screw it up, but I learned something from that experience.

So now when I pick up another none running bike it's just routine. It will run very shortly.

Point is... Just jump in and do it. You can.... 

Creating your own seat from the stock seat pan or creating a total new one from a fiberglass experince is a very rewarding venture...

It only took acouple of hours to install the seat pan and rear section 75022, 75022up.  The only thing I did not like was the back is open so I closed it up using a piece of plastic from Tap plastics.  here is the link to my finished bike . http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=28270.msg289598#msg289598

I had no clue what I was doing when I built up my seat. I started with a stock F seat pan, an idea, basic hand tools and ended up with this:


I think it came out well. Are there things that I will do differently next time? Yes. Are there things that I would like to fix with the seat I have? Yes. Do I have any embarrassment riding down the street on the seat that I have now? No way. :D

sweet seat KB. i always thought the SS seats would make nice cafe seats just shortening them. there's a couple pics of them in the gallery.

I have seen 2 750F's with Corbin Gunfighters that were made for Norton Commandos.  They look great, and according to the owners its an easy conversion.

If you live in NYC dagersh then I know the bikes you are talking about. One of them (blue K tank/clubmans) doesn't have it mounted properly and it does kind of slide around but it looks killer when moving.

FWIW, BTW the hot wing seat is just a copy of the original GFTP cafe seat. My understanding is that the only difference is the hot wing seat does not have the reinforcing strips that the original GFTP seat has. Knowing this, I would probably go with a glass from the past seat instead.

Thanks for the info man. Your bike looks great. I was wondering if the seat setup you got from them used the factory hinges and lock setup ? Thanks again.
