CB750K, longer swingarm and harley rim
« on: December 15, 2007, 06:42:19 AM »
Just an FYI for anyone else that wants to do this -

I used a 16" harley rim, 77-78 CB750K swingarm/brake arm, 77-78 sprocket carrier, stock 48T rear sprocket and 16T 10mm offset front sprocket (cycle xchange).  The rim was laced to the stock hub with a spoke kit, and the chain is 102 links (I think stock is 100 links?).  I had ordered a 108 link chain, and broke it down - if you want a longer wheelbase 104 links would have also worked.

Rim and hub, new bearings (all balls)

Chain clearance:

Big fat tire

If you used late sprocket carrier on early bike  (76 or down) your chain is out of line. Check it with chain off to be sure.

yup. i installed the 75K engine into my 78 chassis. with the 78 sprocket carrier on the hub, it was a good sprocket width out of alignment from the front sprocket. fixed the problem with a sprocket carrier from an earlier K. need a little persuasion to get the carrier into the hub.

but by your picture, it looks fine

That why I bought the 10mm offset sprocket :)

That looks sweet!  I go back and forth about whether or not I should have done my frame and rims in a color besides black.  That red really pops!  What size tires were you able to fit in there?  Also love the spoke pattern, all from the inside looks great.  Greg tried to do that on my rims, but was unable to get it like that due to the spokes.  Great work!

Tire is a 150/80/16 - looks like there's room for more, but I dont think you need more than that - 150 is probably overkill already, and I'd need a wider wheel... maybe down the road if I build another one I'll go wider :)

Bike is really looking good....and like the other guys said..the red frame looks excellent.

Tires are pirelli sport demon - you can get them in just about any size to fit a CB I think -

Any problems with lacing all the spokes on the inside of the hub? Looks great! I have a 140-16 on my bike and like it.
All best,
Ben

Thats how the kit was designed, I believe - there was just no way to lace them inside/outside like stock - there wasnt enough bend in the 'outside' spokes.  I have a set of spokes from buchannan that do lace up like stock, but I had them powdercoated and then decided I didnt want to go that way.

Thanks for the compliments all :)  I've got a local guy that does fantastic powdercoat work, so he should get the credit for the red!

so its an aftermarket swing arm or the newer 750 swing arms are longer that the early models? Would a 750 swing arm bolt into my 500 frame?

Its the swingarm listed in the first post...

The shocks are from a CB900F - I picked them up on ebay for about $150 shipped - seemed to be the going rate when I bought them.
