HD WLA and DAKOTA DC-3
« on: December 16, 2007, 09:30:37 AM »
Had a great day today - My wife and I took my 78 year old step mother out to go on a little flying trip on A Dakota DC-3 as a birthday treat :) The flight was part of the DC-3 72nd Birthday celebrations and turned out to be great fun. The temperatures have hovered around zero Celcius on the gound and it looked overcast but once up in the air the visibility was pretty good. The DC-3 we flew on was used by Speilberg in the HBO mini series Band Of Brothers (which is SUPERB by the way). After the flight we went around the hangers and I met up with some people from the British 1st Airborne Division living history association. I went over to have a look at a HD WLA and had a good talk with the owner who uses the bike to go to work as well as show it every so often. He even let me sit on the bike. I was very HAPPY - it made my day  ;D  Here are some low res pics - hope you like them. I just love meeting up with people and talking about bikes. The flilght on the DC-3 was great too. Step mother was thrilled to go in this wonderful old plane! The wife enjoyed it and she even said (whilst I was looking at the HD) why don't you get one! Then I told her how much they were worth  :o Maybe I should save up. I would love an old military bike.

Super,

Great pics.
I spent a fair amount of time in DC-3's in the U.S. Navy.
(They called 'em C-117's.)
They still flew them in the 70's.!
One memorable flight went from Rota, Spain to
Naples, Italy with a short stop in Palma, Majorca (sp?)
because of a "slight" engine problem.
