New purchase 1978 750K (cont.)

Picked up my new project 78 750K about a month ago and arrived home safe with bike still in back of truck!  I was hoping to just clean a bit the drive the heck out of it next season but, of course it was in a lot worse shape then expected.  Most of the chrome is junk (might clean to be a 50 footer!!)  I like the original style of the bike but I am not one to keep everything OEM.  So I decided to re spoke goldwing DID rims to my hubs.  I picked up a good used set of rims for a Gwing.  One had a few marks in it so I sanded it 220,500, to 2000 and removed the marks.  What is odd is it looks as it the rims are either painted or coated cause where it was sanded the layers are like paint when sanded feathered.  Has anyone experienced this with these rims.  It looks like it is Aluminum and sprayed with Alum. paint to have a satin look.  Hope to receive some feedback on this cause I am wondering if I should polish them or respray .  Hope to get a camera soon that works to post some  pics. as I go.  Bike is stripped and frame is painted.  Ready to rebuild engine an install.  Thanks Geno

Because I bought one and I need to keep convincing myself I made a truly wonderful decision  ;D

That and a few on the forum here..........seem to get a kick out of giving the k8 a bad rap. :(

              To be honest, I made some significant changes to mine, and I love it ;D

Geno- The alloy DID rims seen on the GL1000 and CB750 auto are annodized to create the "Satin" finish that you mentioned. They do scratch relatively easily and it would be rare to find a used set without some scratches. The problem is you can't polish/sand out the scratches without screwing up the finish!  Sorry to say that you have pretty much sealed your own fate by sanding down the marks.  If you want it to look nice you will have to either sand down the entire rim (lots of work! I tried this on a set before deciding to go with black powdercoating instead) and work it up to a nice polish, or spray / have the rims powdercoated.  Have fun.

The earlier CBs were quaint with the little lid on the gas tank which always breaks. The 77-78 were more modern. Honda made improvements each year until they got to 1978. So, you have the end result of all that  problem solving. Then they went DOHC and crapped it all up.

In spite of the fact that the anodizing does scratch easily (at least compared to chromed steel) it is a #$%* to get completely off.  I would be surprised if glass bead was up to the task and really doubt that walnut shell would do much of anything.  If glass beading doesn't get it done, there may be a chemical way of removing anodizing?  Elbow grease with sand paper will work but like I said, lots of work!

Ha ha, there seems to be a river of bullshiite flowing here, by owners of Honda's original red headed step child!

In truth the K7/K8 was a knee-jerk reaction by Honda to re-establish the CB750K after the sales flop that the F/F1 proved to be, but sales continued to plummet, and it was ushered out to make way for the horrible DOHC model.

The K7/K8's have great engines, but not much else going for them, and are about as 'collectable" as my old underpants. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Ha ha, no spite here Derek, I just needed to open a window to allow some of the bullshiite out, remember, it was the public's indifference to the K7/K8's "style" that killed of the mighty 750/4, and forced Honda to prematurely release the DOHC bikes to try to reprise some of their lost sales.

A lot of guys here weren't into 750/4's back then, (I bought my first CB750, a brand new, heavily discounted 1975 CB750 F, in March 1978) and weren't aware of how unpopular the K7/K8 really was, but that's no excuse to try to re-write history on the fly! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yes we are aware that the excellant engine is of small importance comapred to that lovely spoon shaped seat and that quaint little teapot lid on the gas tank on the K0. Actually the Japaneese would not use a 0 since it denotes no progress. In time the collectable market shifts. The rarer K8 will come into it's own.

yeah that flappy little lid is sooo collectable ::) That and those ugly bubble gas tanks. Oh OH and the shorter wheelbase. yep I sure want that. I can really see how there is so much K8 envy.

I am not sure how it is chunky looking when our front fenders on have 1 brace which can be removed while earlier models use 2 of them ugly things!

Oh and ho about the F1 beating any K from71 - 76 and the K8 being just as fast if not slightly faster. Oh yeah, it is close to par with the supposedly great 69 model too......just much more comfortable and better handling!
