wow i really messed up now

I was basking in the glory of my bike finally running great, I was riding it work 16 miles roundtrip everyday on the freeway at speeds in excess of 70 and still had power. So i come home one day, park the bike, then decide to go for a ride after dinner. There was a small puddle of gas under the bike(again). After checking it out, i saw it was dripping from the hose going from the petcock to the carbs. This hose had no clamps on it or anything. So i get a little hose clamp and put it on there. Sort of stopped the leaking but not all the way. Also I noticed that the petcock wasnt screwed into the the tank, waht i mean was it wasa loose. So i tightened that back up. Then i took it out for a ride and it was popping and sputtering and wouldnt even rev. So i was like WTF. So then i go to the local auto parts store, get a new hose and put it on.  I took the petcock out and it looked clean as hell, a little bent but not serious(i think). I put it back in hand tight and connected the the hose. Started it up and it still sputters and pops and backfires and wont rev.... help!!!

Just a guess, but is it possible you fouled/ruined your plugs when the fuel was either flooding the engine or causing the engine to overheat from too little fuel and a lean-situation?  I have noticed that it takes as long as a minute or two for the float bowls to refill with fuel after being drained.  Are the new fuel lines kinked somehow? it safe to assume that your floats are adjusted properly? Are you running inline filters on your fuel lines? Is it possible with a disconnected petcock that something, perhaps a paint-chip or loose dirt got into the fuel line? If so, it doesn't take more than a speck to mess up a carb.  Pain in the butt, but your problem doesn't sound serious considering the circumstances that led to it.

I may be way off base here but considering the symptoms it may be a starting point.

update, i put new gas in it(i poured a whole thing of carb cleaner in there before this happened) and now all the popping is gone. Now it idles weird and it has no power altho it will rev up. I have no idea, i guess i will drain the float bowls and hope for the best???

I would check to make sure your petcock is shuting off. If gas continues to flow you could end up with gas in the oil.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
