I always thought these were just an old SNL joke (season 2, show 7... Gilda, Laraine, and Sparky)......

Have you thought about Doggie Downers?

As DG said, dogs react to you.  They are pack animals who look to the pack leader(hopefully you).

Can you give us any more info.
Is she hyper all the time? Is it only at certain times? if so what are the triggers?
Are there kids around that are excited about christmas and she's picking up off them?
What do you mean by hyper? can you describe the behaviour?
Does it change between being inside and outside the house?
Sorry for all the questions but the more info the better.  :)

Something else to consider...
You brought this animal into your house as a young adult.  This can be a little traumatizing at first and they tend to retreat into themselves more than would be normal as they learn the pack ediquete.  Now that she has become completely comfortable with the pack she may just be showing her true, exhuberant side.  Are you sure that the hyperness is as sudden as you indicate or has it been more gradual and just recently gotten to a point that makes you take notice?

Like has been said already, check out C. Milan (he has a great book also) and Woodhouse for some good tips.  Ceasar's approach is much more about you than the dog and I've found several bad traits in myself that I was inadvertently passing on to my pooch.  It's amazing how little selfawareness people can have even when they make concerted efforts to understand themselves.

she is fixed, didnt think to mention that. i dont THINK she's getting less attention either but i may be wrong about that. yes it did seem to be pretty sudden too. could be that she's just not getting out as much for as long because it has finally gotten cold here

Does this coincide with Xmas stuff?  Any kids coming over all of a sudden?  Is it happy or nervous energy?  She could be exhibiting seperation anxiety.  Why did she leave her first family and what was life like there?

Do a search for the Dog Whisperer. He has some very good insight and way of transmitting it to us humans.

+1 for RM
Watch "Dog Whisperer" with C Milan. He shows how its done (and makes it look simpler than it is). If you have a dog with pent up energy, it has to be released and is often released the only way a dog knows, sometimes good, but usually not good.
C Milan puts it best as you need to be the pack leader and if you arent, then the dog will be the pack leader.
  DG

I've only had a dog for about a year now and soon after getting him I started watching that show. I think I've seen nearly every episode. There are really only a few common themes to what he does.. be a pack leader, reward good behavior, not bad. use calm, acertive energy when training your dog.
Like DG said, it sounds easy.. but I catch myself all the time letting things slip :D

My guess is that you dog just needs to release some energy through exersise or play. It may be that she just discovered one day that running around a being hyper felt good. If you don't have the time to walk the dog or play with her than try putting her on a tread mill. I've seen this done on the "Dog Whisperer" and you just tie the leash to the hand rail and let her walk in the house. It takes a little training I suppose, but it's much easier and less time consuming than taking her for an hour walk each day.

no kids and we dont really do the holidays. she DOES have some sepeartion anxiety but her hyperactivity is happy hyper. we're her THIRD family. first family was military and he got pcs'd to hawaii, second family had a kid that was too rough with her. we got her in july. she HAS become more at home lately, she tries to get bucky, the siamese with no claws to play all the time now. she also had no manners at all when she came here. the wife works at home so she'll be able to work with the dog alot, trying to give her some good regular excercise. Ceasar Milan IS amazing isnt he? i watch his show when i have a chance to

The change in my brother-in-laws' unruly farm German Shepard after he used some of the Dog Whisperer techniques was astonishing - it works.

man, that's funny.  When kathleen tells Rosie "No", it's exactly like a teenage girl whispering her boyfriend's name.
Rosie likes routine.  We have to spell some words like "walk" because if someone says it, Rosies jumps up and grabs her leash on the wall.  At 8AM it's breakfast time.  By 8:15 she's bark to remind us.

When I first aqcuired my last dog Bonehead (English Setter from a rescue home) she had serious hyperactivity issues, she would've quite easily run for 20+ miles every day if allowed too, and could never properly settle down to sleep for more than an hour at a time, our Vet eventually narrowed it down to a malfunctioning thyroid. A couple of little pills in her food every day and she settled down to a more normal behaviour pattern within a couple of weeks.

Made me laugh too ;D  Bonehead used to love being out in 'adverse' weather, the wetter the better ::)

We were never very popular with the the 'owners club' type setter owners though :-\  I used to keep her clipped rather short (you're supposed to keep their fur long on their chests and round the legs), because that way it was a damned sight easier to hose and dry her after she'd been playing in the really rancid puddles ::)

I'd quite like another dog, but we'll have to wait until our loveable but psychotic cat eventually dies, if we got anything smaller than a Rottweiler she'd probably kill it :o

Shoot that little fuucker mate, it's probably possessed! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

we got the small dog so the cats could train it. my little abysinnian rocky will attack ANY big dog that has the misfortune to step foot into my house. a friends retired mp shepherd came for a visit one day and within a minute rocky had him pinned in the corner whining and cowering, little 6 pound cat and a giant german shepherd. i laugh every time i think about it. he leaves the little dogs alone though.

I got shot in the leg walking home from primary school back in the 1960's, the doc pulled out a 22 slug from my left knee, but he said it was fired from a long way away, and only broke the flesh. I've still got a little scar there though.

Years later I was coaching a female soldier "on the mound" (not her's) who was frightened of the recoil on her FN SLR (beautiful weapon) and anyway, she fired from the 300 metre mound, the round struck something hard on the 200 metre mound, and part of the projectile picked my "bush hat" off my head and punched a jagged hole through the brim, and just scratched the top of my skull.

I've since decided that I'm bullet-proof.  ;D
