CB750 - Stator cover screws
« on: December 18, 2007, 03:43:57 PM »
It took my impact wrench to get the screws loose on my KO stator cover and shifter cover for the first time since 1970.  The some of the screws got sort of diggered up in the process so I need to replace a few.  Honda wants like $2.50 per screw which is outrageous.  Do you guys have a source to use for these screws?  Thanks.

I suggest getting some hex head cap screws from your local hardware store to replace them.  The next time you have to tinker with the alternator it will be a lot easier.  This is what I did for my CB 500.

...there are several people on evil bay that sell kits of the hex screws that replace all of the phillips ones. They probably should be considered one time use only!  >:(

OK, but how much hassle will I get from CB750 buffs when they see the hex screws vs the phillips?  I suppose if I want the OEM look I should stay with the phillips.

None from me.. those things SUCK.  I had to use the impact driver to get every damn one of them out!

I guess it depends on what you are planning to do with the bike. I'm sure during any critical judging, you will get dinged. If you just want a nice rider the hex ones will be fine and more functional. Most people won't notice the difference.

Of course, if I see the bike the first thing I'll say is "those aren't correct".  ;D

Unless you're doing a concours restoration who cares. The phillips head screws are a PITA and seem to get gouged up easily by previous owners.  ;) There's a forum member who has screw kits...he also sells on ebay I think...for at least the 750s but I don't remember his name right now. Do a search and you'll find him. As far as getting hassled...it happens no matter what you've done or not done to your bike. ;D ;D ;D

I'll start right now...What the hell are you doing with those nasty, junk, stripped head prone screws holding your outer cases together?  ;D ;D ;D

If you fit stainless dont forget to coat them in High Temp copper grease to stop the stainless/alloy eletrolytic corrossion

I replaced mine with allen bolts but if you want the philips ones these are the people I bought all the other sizes for other parts of my bike.

Cheers

I bet at least 80 % of owner worked on 750's have allen bolts..

Even the factory switched to them later on I think..

I think I will go with the allen bolt.  Not sure if I should go with the stainless or what?  A bolt is a bolt to me.  What is the best to use?  What is the torque number you guys are using on the allen head bolt here?  Or just snug it up?  I will check Fastenal here and see what they have.

This seems like a good source
http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/torquetable.htm

At the bottom of the page, look up 5mm hex bolt 3.2 to 4.4 ft.lb, which is also about 6 NM. As you say, just snug.

At a couple of Honda dealers in my area I see that my local is getting $1.67 each and one in another close town is getting $1.00 each. http://www.pawpawcycle.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=2560023&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1973&fveh=132837  Bet some people on the site may have some good examples laying around in a bucket etc. if you posted a want add with the sizes.   If I had a super nice K0 like yours I think personally I would stick to the stock bits.
Why did you have to go in there Johnie ?

I went to Ace when I needed to replace a few.  The head was slightly larger but they still fit.  They should have a gauge on their wall so you can match them all up.  Screw a 2 dollar screw 8) I got mine for maybe 50 cents

I have an assortment of philips screws; head is slightly wider than the Honda screws. They are zinc plated and made out of a harder alloy. Why don't you use something like that? It is closer than stock, cheaper, and how many times do you crack your engine open? Chances are that copper grease prior to installation, and a good-fitting screwdriver tip for deinstallation, will make things easier when disassembly time comes.

I am going to start an "oil"-like discussion by saying, do not use the copper antisieze paste. It does ugly things with aluminum and stainless steel. Use the standard silver (aluminum/zinc based) antisieze paste. You want to stop the dissimilar metal process, not accelerate it.

Or Tef-Gel, a PTFE antisieze paste used on boats to prevent the galvanic corrosion of aluminum and stainless steel.

Gosh...this original post goes back to December of 2007 when I was doing my first 750. As I read my first post there it really shows how much of a "newbie" I was...:)  And still learning...

I beg your pardon! I'm perfectly happy with the look of Phillips screws and don't need no stinking stainless steel in my casings, thank you. This past winter I had all the engine covers off for the first time in the ten years I've owned the bike, and didn't trash a single screw. And no, it's not a concourse bike, and I own neither JIS screwdrivers nor an impact driver.
