Lean angle of side stand. bent stem?
« on: December 21, 2007, 01:29:50 AM »
Hi all,

My bike is leaning to much when rests on it's side stand.

Since the center stand is broken (was broken during shipping) it is the only way the bike stands.

(You can see at the picture that it has arrived this way and the shipper had to "compensate" with extra stuff below the side stand to keep it upright)

My question is,  can I force the "stem" of the side stand to the right angle or will it broke?
I am afraid to heat it,  since it IS the frame and might deform.

Any advise will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Jona

usually when the stand is like that its the actual kickstand that has bent and not the frame tab. the frame tab is made so that it is very ridgid. If it is infact the frame tab that is bent, heat away, but maybe consider bracing it up a little.

Those things can be found on e-bay all the time.  I think they're forged steel, and heating it and bending it back might not be a good idea.  Are the tabs where the stand mounts to bent in any way?  Is the pivot bolt broken or worn out?  Are the holes in the frame tabs and the stand out of round?  Maybe it's something other than a bent stand.

Hey cb750 I have the exact same bike and my kickstand is too long because I have lowered the bike about 4 inches.  If you want I would be willing to trade for you mine for yours.  You can see my bike here. http://jaypage.com/pics/motorcycle/Bike%2012_13_07.JPG  Anyways if you are interested let me know.

I even have my old center stand and all the parts.  You can have those as well.

On my '77 CB550 I am using a CBR600 F3 stand. It bolts right up, is a lot lighter and longer than the 550 stand. When I'm finished the rolling chassis I'l cut (if needed) the stand and reweld the shoe at the ideal length.

Thanks all for your replys.

The tabs seems to be in fine condition as are the holes.

I am afraid that mount is bent.

Hi,
My 1977 CB750 leans over quite a bit when its in its side stand - on mine at least part of the problem is the worn bolt and pivot holes which are really oval and allow a lot of side movement of the stand.  Not tacked this yet but fitting another slightly longer stand  or fitting a shoe to this one sound good. Bike sits up nicely if I put about 3/4" to 1 " wooden board under the side stand.

You all should check the width of slot where it fits over frame tab.
There is a specification for it which I think is 10 degrees.
If the mounting bolt has worn or been allowed to come loose, its a good possibility that the 'slot' part is too wide.
A burr on the flat edge of pivot bolt can have the same effect

Double check your frame, too. Sometimes a bend side stand is caused by the frame itself cracking and letting the side stand twist away from the frame. Hopefully that's not it, but check it out anyway.
