CB750K4 disassembly - day report
« on: December 23, 2007, 02:42:13 pm »
Well today was the first chance I got to get in the garage and temps were above freezing. Of course temps were colder inside the garage!  :P and it hovered at around 6C (43F) all day. As the snow melted outside I got to work on disassembling the bike ready for the ritual engine removal. Im losing count of how many times Ive had this engine out in the last 7 years since I bought the bike but its been a lot....always something needing done and my ever-lasting quest for an oil-leak free bike continues! Spent around 4 hours today removing all the easy stuff and now its ready for the engine to be removed and ready for Mikes magic to fix the oil leak (see pics) and install heavy duty studs (should have done this last year) and an F2 cam (no money for a more expensive cam but thanks to Sean(Scondon) and Joe (Joeb) for sorting me out) to match the head work done last year.

Will also give me a chance to repair the hole in #4 HM300 pipe and replace the rear shocks with something a little more solid for the babes on the back  ;). Steering head bearings are also on the list...sigh...

Cheers
Andy

Good luck with your dissasembly!

This thaw we're having is really welcome.  I just chipped away 2 inches of icy stuff from the back door.

Keep the posts coming Andy, I'm gearing up for the same and you're providing inspiration.

Happy holidays

Yeah its nice and warm down here Ben - my snowman on motorcycle is melting  :D. Ill keep you posted with pics as and when I get back to it....this Christmas stuff gets in the way and I have a ton of work to get through...but today was good....now just need to drain the oil, move the back wheel forwarded so I can take the front sprocket off and take the o-ring chain off, and then good to lift out.....

...then get started on the K2 cafe...easier...just need to remove the HM341 exhaust and replace the rear shocks with recent Ebay purchase - CB1100F shocks - 14` eye to cleavis - taller! Looking forward to that....

cheers

Well Andy,
You've thrown down the heated gauntlet. I saw your post at 10 last eve and by 11 I was in the garage. Of course with 3 bikes and a car and god knows what else in there it wan't until 1:30 until I had made a space to commence. By 4:30 I had pretty much gotten the pipes, rear tire,  electrical connectors and studs out. The damn cam cover is always a bit of a pain for me but by 5:30 I had the stinking oil pump and cover off as well as the cam cover. It was just starting to get light when I realized I'd have to pull the engine by myself as not a creature was stirring. I pulled the engine with a jig I'd made last year, but it isn't getting any easier!!!

Anyway, it's quarter to eight this morning, and I wanted to write and thank you for your inspiration. Here's a photo of what it looks like now:

Good to see you'll get that nice leak fixed... it was getting pretty bad.  I just wish I had a garage.  My 2 bikes were sitting under almost 2ft of snow as of last night..and now still under 6inches with the heat and rain...  I just hope to be able to pull the cover to give it its every 2 week start.

Good luck with the tear down!!

I'm on the same quest :), but I'm not nearly as anxious as you to pull the engine. I'm on to the Hondabonded rubber pucks, blue loctite on 6mm cam holder bolts, retorquing head bolts after 24 hrs. Are you considering the heavy duty studs as a leak preventer or a performance enhancer?

Ah someday Kevin, someday.....the HD bolts are as a leak preventer (I hope!). Last year I had the top end rebuilt and mild porting by Mike Rieck - slightly higher compression than stock and I think this has contributed to my current leak. Im hoping the HD studs will help fix this. As a performance enhancer Im replacing the K4 cam with a mild improvement - the F2 cam that Joe (joeb) is sending me. Hopefully after this I can have a leak free bike!!! (and it will run pretty well too!).

cheers
