Disregard, just actually read the thread and caught up with everything.

Nice to see another Lexingtonian.

In the apartment case..do a search of owner, then here you contact by registered mail..it usually comes back and they assign new registration.

You could say it was left by a tenant that stiffed you on rent and do a reggie check...

People that move  frequently or did not register a bike in ther name when they got it for free.. usually avoid accepting registered mail like the plague.. making it all the easier.

check for lien while at it..

wOw . . .what a LOT of hassle for a $200 bike. . .  .

In my limited experiences with DMVs across the country (have lived in several different states) I would have to say that I would NOT give them any 'ammo' to work with to make your life hell. .  .lol. They will try and nickel and dime you for every paperwork cost imaginable, with you likely still losing the bike, the original owner not even hearing about it, and the bike seized by the state to later be sold at auction a year later. I'm all for obeying the law but there are just some times where you don't want to tell 'the man' the whole story... .

If the bike was stolen, it likely was many moons ago and is a totally different bike by now (age, parts swaps, etc) and what good it would do to anyone previously involved by now is minimal at best, I would imagine. . . .

DOOD. .  .buy another frame, switch what ya need, and be done with it?  I mean, I see frames all the time for under $100 - totally papered. You could do it in a week!  You will spend that much time just talking to DMV clerks that are utterly clueless about motorcycles explaining the entire case over and over and over and over and. .. .  . .

Are you on the run, MB? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

L O L. . . .  naw, my life isn't THAT exciting. I haven't even gotten a parking ticket in like 10+ years?   ;)

Just did some wandering in the early '90s, living like a hippie girl in a VW camper van roaming around and selling artwork, playing music, going to Dead shows . . . .good times.

well, i wouldn't call myself a lexingtonian.  i'm from the west side of cincinnati.  met a cute little girl, bought a ring, and now i live here (for now  ;D).  i'm kidding.  it's a little small, but i like it.  just got back from the gorge...it wasn't too cold last nite.  found the infamous turtle back arch and camped a little after the ridge.  ever been, turin?

bunny, i'm definitely thinking that's the way to go.  i'm watching on ebay.  however, the shipping is the killer.  but, once again, it's the way to go.

Louisvillian myself, spending some time over here doing schoo(for now ;D)l.  Doing the ring/vows thing next fall.  Love the gorge, haven't camped in awhile but used to just use the park campsite or go up to koomers ridge during my scouting days.   I'll pm you some local riding links in case you're interested.

My dad's buddy got a great price on a HD chopper when I was a kid.  I remember seeing it and thinking that it looked like a hunk of junk.  Took the guy over a year to get it chromed out and looking show room clean.  I mean it was a classic 70's chopper that made you smile just to look at.

He got pulled over the first time he took it out!  They ran the numbers on the bike and it came back stolen.  He lost all the parts he put into the bike, and all the time he put into it.  He found out who the owner was with a bit of help from a cop buddy and talked to him.  He explained everything to the guy and offered to buy the bike from him.  The guy told him that the bike is not for sale now that it looks so good, and he could ef off!  :o

This may be late, but fwiw I checked my frame, and where the vin is it looks and feels flat.  The vin has the right amount of rust for a 30 year old bike and the nasty paint is seamless factory quality.  Just saying mine isn't stolen or worked over and the vin area is kinda flat also.  You might check into the new frame that wasn't stamped idea.  Also, you might check to see if there is a lien on the bike, if so you know who it goes to.  I am kinda in the same situation, but mine has fallen out of the system and there are no liens.  As I have a bill of sale I just need to assemble it for a vin inspection.  Thus far I haven't done anything to make it prettier or more functional that can't be unbolted and left home while I go for the vin inspection.  Though I called the dmv prior to picking it up for 100.00 to make sure the title was clear.

Call dmv or the local state troopers, explain the situation and see what they say.  If you have a bill of sale, I doubt that they would give you too much trouble even if it is stolen.  Worst case you are out 200.00 and a bit smarter for the next time.  Better than using parts off of it and finding out too late that it is stolen.  Just my $0.02.

I am in the oposite situ with my RD400....have a vin but no title....

looks like the bike was last registered in the 1980's (had some DoD registratino stickers ont eh forks)

figured I would cut it down for a cafe type project.  have a conneciton to get the existing VIN ran and in IL I cna do a lost title registration through a service but the title cannot be transferred for 3 years while the search is open for it.  I was told just save receipts for any work and then if an owner comes forward I have paperwork to support the money I have invested.

I am in Lexington and i am trying to title a 73 cb500 they get twitchy about the VIN#'s. I had an old title from Ohio and one of the # was slightly illegible and they freaked. Got the 3rd degree in the inspection space @ the parking garage. All i could do not to take offense. I don't envy what your going through. I also hate paying property taxes on all my stuff, luckily my House property tax is in escrow i couldn't handle that payment once a year. Where you teaching? Give turin or me a PM some time might go for a day ride, or just have a beer at Shamrock.
