Side Cover Tab Repair
« on: December 19, 2007, 05:02:17 PM »
I have looked all over for a thread on repairing the side cover tabs. Can some one point in the right direction?
I have tried many things to repair these with, epoxy, superglue other glues. Does anything really work?

IMO Your best bet (besides NOS, or aftermarket) is to put some fiberglass epoxy on the inside of the side cover and tabs... and change the bushings on your frame so that you do not keep breaking them every time you take them off. (don't ask me how I know.) :o

I had a broke tab on my Wing and used JB Weld.  That was 4 years ago and it has held terrific.  There are other products people use, but JB Weld did it for me.  You can get it at your hardware store.

Guys,
my other interest...apart from this forum  :) Is model making.

You can use superglue and baking soda. It is extremely strong, it can be filed, sanded, drilled etc.

BUT, you cannot mix them and then apply it. The baking soda is basically a catalyst for the superglue. Put the two parts together apply the superglue and dust it with baking soda. When the baking soda touches the superglue....BANG! The combination is solid as rock.

The only drawback is that if you have excess baking soda in your mix it will remain reactive. If you paint over the bond over time the baking soda will work its way through the paint finish.

JB WELD is probably a better solution is this application..that stuff is tough and available in most hardware stores.

I've had good results melting cracks together with a soldering gun.  I'll reinforce the back of the split with fiberglass mesh, and fill the front with plastic filler.
