What do you know about a 1977 Yamaha XS360?
« on: December 27, 2007, 05:24:11 AM »
There is one for sale cheap nearby. Is there anything in particular I should look out for? If it were a 350/400 Four I would know to check the cam chain tensioner, an early Titan should be checked for 4th/5th gear whine, a GS should be checked for a fried stator & regulator/rectifier. So what is the weak link in these XS360's?

Nope, only the typical used-bike issues:  how does it run, does it smoke, does it clatter, tires, chain, sprockets, etc.

This was Yamaha's answer to the Honda 350/360 twin, and their effort to develop an econo-bike OTHER than a two-stroke, which were being phased out.  Within a year or two, the 360 grew to a 400, and lasted until the mid-80s recession forced all the manufacturers to dramatically cut their line-ups back.

There were several versions:  some had disk brakes, some had drums; some had cast wheels, some had spokes; some had electric starts, some didn't.

Good luck with it,

Kirk

I have been scouring the net for anything interesting on this little orphan and haven't turned up much. I think I will go and take a look at it tomorrow. I'll probably get it. Yamaha only imported them for 2 years until it became the XS400. If nothing else it should be a conversation starter. I'm sure I will hear a lot of "what the hell is that."
