Topic: Getting a CCW in VA

I'm looking to sell my S&W .38 special and pick up a Kahr CW9 for carry and home.  Just not a fan of a revolver in the pocket and can't afford the Kahr without selling the other.  I'm not planning on taking it everywhere but sometimes we head to some areas (DC/Maryland area in particular) that I'd prefer to have some protection.  Cops can't be everywhere at once, ya know.

Anyone gone through the hoops and have some advice?  Doesn't appear to be too restrictive.  Background check won't be a problem and I'll be taking a class by late spring if all goes according to plan.

james,in hopewell you have to have the class then you go to the police range with a cop and handle and shoot the weapon there.thats about it.

That permit won"t allow you to carry in D.C..  Besides, I travel into D.C. a fair amount, and I never felt I needed a gun.  You need to stop watching Fox news.

Your Virginia CCW is no good in either Maryland or DC.  If you want to carry in either place, you are out of luck since obtaining a non-resident permit is next to impossible - obtaining a resident permit in those places is just about next to impossible.

I knew DC was strict, but thought MD was reciprocal with VA.  Lots of states make it hard to get a non-resident license but they'll acknowledge your state's if you're passing through.  I'll have to look into transportation laws in MD.

And FYI, I grew up walking around in Church Hill (area of Richmond with the highest murder per capita in the country for quite a while) getting random strangers to buy us booze.  I'm not shy when it comes to "sketchy" areas but now that I have the wife (and hopefully little ones soon) to look after, I don't want to be caught with my guard down or with no way to defend them. 
Best course of action is ALWAYS to avoid a situation that would make a weapon necessary but if the situation finds you...

Don't listen to the hoplophobes, getting your CCW shows you are a good, responsible citizen that cares about his family and others safety.  If more of us took on this responsibility, we wouldn't have the crime problem we have now.  Carrying a pistol is like having a spare tire in your car; you certainly hope you never need it, but if you do........

And soon ,hopefully, the SCOTUS will rule that DC's gun ban is unconstitutional (which it certainly is) and the bureaucrats will have to allow honest people to protect themselves, instead of the law protecting the criminals.  Good luck on your permit.  I might add that if you are planning on carrying in your pocket, get a pocket holster designed for your gun.  It keeps the gun from "printing" and scaring any hoplophobes that might be around.  I'm proud of you for shouldering your responsibility for your families safety, most people today don't care enough about their family to do so.

Thanks.  I'm planning on getting a pocket holster for that exact reason.  There are plenty of people around here that would freak if they could tell you were carrying.  Doesn't make sense to me but not alot does these days

Not sure about your county Cville, but Virginia is have to issue if your background check is good.
Of course they want some kind of hunter safety or other requirements based on the counties.
I think that is changing too as some places in Virginia have tried to deny permits to good citizens
and this has been successfully challenged. Both the wife and I have had ccw for quite a few years.
Not any hoops in Floyd county, prior military service or hunting license or hunter safety course.
No need to go to a range here to prove you can shoot.

Check the reciprocal site (google for it) but off the top of my head,
NC, Tenn, MS, KY (I think) and several other States will recognize your
Virginia ccw.

Just seeing that word made me smile.  Anytime I hear that term, I know Ive found a kindred spirit.
