GL1000s
« on: December 27, 2007, 10:47:18 AM »
I nosed around a little, but didn't get the answer.  I hope it hasn't been asked before. A question in another thread got me thinking.

Why isn't the GL1000 considered an SOHC and included in this forum?  While it does have 2 cams, technically it is a SOHC design.  And it is a four.

I have to defend my question?  Got something against Wings?  Can we not agree it is the second most notable Honda ever?  The CB750 changed motorcycles forever, but the same thing could be said of the GL1000.  The CB just did it first.  And the CB was such a departure from what was, up until then, the norm.  The GL was just the next great thing from Honda.

Is your animosity towards the GL based on what the bike morphed into 6 years later?  The GL was a naked bike until 81 or so.  I hate to think about all the CBs there were with Vetter fairings and bags.

It just seems to me that the GL1000 shouldn't be in with "other bikes".

Speaking of Wings and Kghost, I once tried to nominate his Wing for BOTM and guess what happened. ::) ;D  I was thinking the same thing. Honda......SOHC4........So, why not Bike Of The Month?
Gotta admit Tim's (Kghost) Wing IS something else. 8) ;)

BTW, last couple of times that I've talked to him (fairly recently), he's been pretty busy with work and all. Took a while to get any backup help so that he could get some time to himself.

When I notice that someone, who's kinda regular, doesn't show up now and then, I try to get a PM off to them to see how things are going with them and all. Not being nosey, just concerned.

                                       Later on, Bill :) ;)

Yea, Goldwings only have a single cam; sort of. The rockers and valve adjustments are exactly the same GL1000 and GL1100. Bet you can swap parts?

It has two cams, actually, and therefore never can be a SOHC.

I have three GL1100s.

But, they are amazing bikes, despite the fugly comment.

I like the look of the bike with that seat.

I looked up some info on the GL1000's and it says the "tank" is just a cover for electronics, etc.  Where is the actual fuel tank located?

Neither of those bikes would be on my wish list, I’m not into cc’s and 2T smoke, but some people do like that stuff in the UK …. just not my cup of tea at all!
Go for the dream fella, if you want one of those type bikes get one.  ;)

The gas tank is a polyethylene jug tucked inside the frame under the seat.

My GL1100 I is a great bike, very dependable. Awesome power plant.

Check out some of the gallery bikes at www.nakedgoldwings.com
You'll be surprised.

Good question though, about the SOHC.....

Yes there are 2 cams, but it is a Single Over Head Cam design, therefore is an SOHC!

You probably never heard one with a race cam.  A buddy bought a new one in '75 and built it up to drag race it.

Why isn't the GL1000 considered an SOHC and included in this forum?  While it does have 2 cams, technically it is a SOHC design.  And it is a four.

I assume you refer to the tech forum here:
SOHC/4 Bikes
Discussions about the SOHC/4 motorcycle models - CB750, CB650,CB550,CB400F,CB350F

Without passing judgement on either, they're completely different machines. One being an air-cooled inline engine with chain drive - the other a liquid-cooled boxer with shaft drive. They don't even put the gas tank in the same place.

The GL is an 'Other Bike' here just like the CBs are 'Other Bikes' on GL forums. I can live with that.

I'm sure that there are Model 'T' forums and Model 'A' forums, with owners of both who wonder "Why not a T&A forum"...

Passing judgement.... the early GL doesn't look bad - just makes the already porky 750 look light and agile by comparison. The later GL is actually a 2-wheeled car and therefore not a bike, imo.

Make that two troublemakers.

Happy trails.

Yes, it does.  It looks like someones half baked idea of a "safer" bike.  It also won't ever see the light of production.  It would most certainly knock a rider off the rear of the bike.

This rates right up there with the crazy idea of putting seatbelts on bikes.  When it was tested, it almost always ended up decapitating the test dummy.

ouch.

edit....
anyway...

I google image searched 'honda goldwing'...

In the first row was something called an Accord - the name of a car, last I heard.
Directly below - that airbag contraption. car parts. Isn't that thing on the back called a trunk, btw? more car parts.
And then at the bottom of the page......
an act totally unbecoming of a bike.....

Need I say more.

Peace.

Not sure about ALL of the new ones but, they do indeed have  an airbag on, at least one (or some) model(s).
