Clutch chatter - something I found........
« on: December 29, 2007, 08:40:23 PM »
Guys,

researching the internet for my clutch issues I found this link and post it here for anyone who may like to experiment, or comment on its merits.....just sharing.... :)

"there is a very efective wayto quiet noisy clutches.  first remove the clutch basket to be sure the rivets holding the driven gear to the basket are not loose. if they are ok proceed.   notice the tangs of the friction  discs  have some clearance  where they sit in the fingers of the alum basket.  thats where the noise comes from.  take four pieces of the apropriet thickness steel shim stock bend at 90 degrees  and insert them down between the middle discs tang and the side of the clutch basketsfingerso it takes up the clearance of the middle disc only. bolt them to the clutch baskets fingers at 12oclock, 3oclock, 6oclock, and 9oclock.  on the trailing edge of the fingers. looking at the outside of the clutch  the trailing edge is the left side of the finger. bolt the shims in place with 1 4-40 allen head machine screw each. i did this on my 750 and its been in place for years and works great.  you only need to take up the crearance on one friction disc because they are all held together by the springs."

maybe if you click on the link, you may be able to find the author . and send him/her a message or something.....totally amazing ingenuity if it works............

I would think you may need to balance the clutch basket after doing that to it.... :)

Just so long as your shims are all balanced before you put them it (and you actually hit them at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 marks) then I don't thing balancing should be too big an issue. Good idea to bring up, though.

I don't understand why is there nobody to make a better basket clutch?
you can find everything to rebuild a cb750 to a "like new" condition and i would say better than "new" and no one came up with this part.I really like my bike, but this is "THE
THING" i hate the most on my bike.I know,i know some of you will tell me to just balance my carb and the noise will disappear.Maybe a little bit but it's not enough for me ;D

Am i the only one who think like that ???

I'd love the chatter to go away as well - but I don't feel like experimenting at the moment...

maybe with some more knowledgable input from the engineering people and engine builders whether this is a worthwhile  issue..

I also found another article on properly aligning and adjusting the clutch basket etc...I will put that in another post later today....it looked very interesting, and did not seem to be too difficult to understand...

Well Charlie, it seems to me a "temporary fix" rather than a permanent cure. All CB750's rattle a tad, and a well used one will rattle more than a "trailer queen", but the rattle shouldn't be excessive, or annoying. If it is, fix it properly with new parts, and DO balance your carbs, this is the major cause of rattles in CB750's.

My grandfather told me about a "Panther Sloper" he bought during the great Depression that had a "knock", so he pulled it down and found a beautifully carved wooden piston with a tin plate crown nailed on. The PO couldn't afford/obtain a new piston, so he made this work. Didn't solve anything, just kept him going. Are we a society of "Bodgers", or dedicated enthusiasts who'd rather do things right? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Nah, no BS guys, it was made from "Red Gum", an Aussie hardwood available locally, and in a long stroke, slow revving engine, with a tin piston crown, and my grandfather said it worked ok. Cheers, Terry. ;D
