Trying to ID Electronic Regulater from 70,s
« on: January 01, 2008, 07:37:40 PM »
This looks like a "magic box" as the HD crowd call them, looks the same as tha,. finned  box with solis state stuff inside & sealed.

I believe Jammer sold these in the 70,s for a few different bikes.

I think they were made by action Choppers in maybe Riverside Ca..and called Volt Pak

Sticker on bottom says VoltPak Model KS

stamped on is KS 367  8

has a black and yellow lead like in a pair then a gap and 3 more yellows.

sound familiar to anyone??  It looks NOS..

I found this online, along with Instructions (which I could not read) on Eurospares.. not sure of application?? also said not made since 99.

KS is for 3 phase permanent magnet rotor alternators
can be used on 2 wire single phase alternator if you use the 2 outside yellow wires.

The RX model is for excited field alternators.. which I presume means Honda 750.

anyone use these?? converts to solid state regulator and rectifier..a bit bigger than a pak of smokes..

The voltpak has been brought up here a few times, but this is the first time I've heard of one existing for excited field alternators. Whatever, if you have the KS one it's not going to work on a SOHC4. Many other old Hondas have permanent magnet alternators and it may be usable on them.
For the excited field type we have, there are a lot of options. Later Honda reg/rect units can be used with some minor wiring changes. There are a bunch of automotive regulators you can use. Oregon Motorcyce Parts http://oregonmotorcycleparts.com/vregulators.html makes an electronic regulator that installs easily and works well, for the price you could get a car one and wire it up yourself to save quite a few dollars though. The original electromechanical regulator works fine generally: it can be cleaned and adjusted if you know what you're doing. The usual cause of charging trouble - probably with more posts here than even the oil controversies - is dirty/corroded bullet connectors and switch contacts. A thorough "renovation" of the wiring harness and switches usually corrects charging trouble, while buying new regulators and rectifiers just de-cashes your wallet with no resolution of the problem.
