I am trying to find a seat for my '77 CB750F, but every time I bid, I get sniped. And it's not like I wouldn't bid more, but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. Someone comes in and beats my auction by a dollar or so every damn time. Is there some secret I don't know about?

THREE TIMES NOW!!!

I'm ready to punch a hole in the wall I'm so frustrated. All I want is a seat with a non-rusty pan. I'll take a piece of #$%* if I have to, and recover it.

AAAAAARRGGH!!!

I've seen references to sniping. Can someone explain to me how this works? I'm assuming you have to provide some sort of max dollar amount, right? If so, what's the difference between that and just setting your own max bid and letting eBay do it?? Just curious.

Well I dont know about the programs that do it for you but when I snipe, I bid in the last 5 seconds or so. To squeeze it in before the auction closes.

The reason they're only beating you by a dollar each time is because that's how ebay's proxy bidding system works.  It doesn't matter how much higer the next person's bid is over yours, ebay will only show one increment over the next lowest bidder, and up to a certain price, one dollar is the bidding increment.

The best winning strategy is this:

Bid only once.

Bid as late in the auction as possible.

Bid your absolute maximum, plus a few odd cents to beat a tie.

The hardest part for me is finding my absolute maximum.  But basically I come up with a price where if someone bids more than that, I know they paid too much.  Also, keep an eye out for misspelled auctions or incorrectly listed items.  You can get some good deals that way.

The difference is that by putting in your max bid in the last few seconds you avoid other people "nibbling" away at your proxy until they are just beating you by one increment.  Basically you are taking advantage of the fact that most bidders don't put in their max bid and just wait for someone else to bid so they can counterbid.

Sounds like you may be underestimating the comercial value...
I bid in two ways; for something that might be cool to have but is not a big deal, I'll wait as long as possible and then bid whtever change I'm willing to blow.
For something I REALLY want, I take what I think it may be worth and add what it's worth to me (ie- how f#*king bad do I want it?). Then I add $6.52, wait as long as I can, and bid. If someone still beats me, I assume they're stupid or crazy and you can't win against people like that.  Sniping or not, if you have the highest bid, you win.
I read on a review of spiper programs that names with the word "hammer" in it could be viruses. So watch out.

                                                       Unless I'm wrong.

You have to bid with the price that you value the part at.  If you bid $80.00 because the part is worth that much you will not have to pay that much unless some one else bids $79.00.  If the second highest bid is only $40.00 you will only pay $41.00.

In the case where you are beat by $1.00 all that means is you are the second highest bidder.  The winner of the auction may have bid much more than what they have to pay but e-bay only requires them to pay $1.00 over your bid.

I always wait till the last 5 sec. to bid but I also set my bid at the price I'm willing to pay.

I guess my eBay strategy is pretty simplistic by comparison. I use the "bid and forget" method. What's it worth to me, add a dollar and some odd change, then just forget it. If I get for the price good, if I don't, oh well. Not terribly sophisticated but it avoids remorse.

I have two seats with tail pieces. No rips in the covers. I'd be happy to send pics and give ya a low price. I'm in Oakland,CA. I've got a lot of F2 parts that I'll list in the "for sale" section as soon as I get done with my current project.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I bid on at least 7 and won 2. The first one wasn't worth anything and I would be embarrassed to give it to someone. The second one is as close to NOS as you can get. When cleaned, it is almost perfect. Either get sniper software or be patient.

I just thought I would share that I just won an auction from bulletcycles....nice left hand sidecover with a 20cm
hole drilled into it. What a deal.

Me thinks I will leave bad feedback as he never said anything about the extra ventilation and does not
reply to emails.

My point? Sometimes when you win, you still lose >:(

Michel,

In addition to negative feedback, be sure to report it to eBay.  Many people never bother to look at feedback, but three black marks on his eBay record and he'll get the boot.

My winning auction.....the guy didn't answer my emails. Left negative feedback, but he has sold 4000+ so he is probably a store.

The seat for sale on ebay: I have seen this guy sell many seats and if I remember correctly, most buyers are satisfied.

Hey Michel, wanna sell me that holy sidecover? (I take it the hole is in fact 20mm?) I need a "lefty" for my K1, and I don't mind filling the hole? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Bid real high = pay too much. I am a very unsatisfied ebay addict. I don't get much buzz for all the money that has exited my bank account. I'd rather spend the excess on good scotch or beer.

Another issue I found recently was the pop-up that came up when I put in a "neutral" rating on a seller. Oooh, watch out, it warned -- this is a "public forum." Since when is buying something for too much and having it shipped two weeks later a "positive" experience. At best, it is neutral, meaning, I got what I asked for.

If more people were honest and gave a simple "neutral" when everything went as expected, then I would be more trusting. None of that "AAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++" crap! Gimme a break .... >:(

Be careful, some stuff people are eGouging for big bucks is still available from the dealer. Check to be sure.
