cb305fe number

Is the VIN on the motor supposed to match the VIN on the frame?  The numbers are the same series 10000... but they are different.  I am wondering if the bike I have, had the engined swapped, or was this just the way they did it in the 70's.  Pardon my ignorance in the matter, but does anyone know?

It is normal for the numbers to be a little bit different.  As the numbers get higher, thd difference becomes greater.  I am guessing it might be due to engines being taken by the factory for warranty replacements or other special projects.

Some number comparisons I know about are:

                     Manufactured        Frame           Engine

John's  72         7 / 72              1018143       1018140
RK's                 9 / 72              1028626       1028686
My  73             12/ 72              1042883       1043005
My  74             5 / 74               2007675       2007684
