The PUSSYfication of Motorcycling..!!
« on: January 05, 2008, 10:15:10 AM »
It all started in 1914. Indian annouced it was offering an electrical starter. Well, it did not work as well as planned, mainly because batteries were not up to snuff in those days.

Further on in time, it became perfected ar rather more refined. At first it was only offered on a few models, but gradually became more and more common.

Now there is instances where it is usefull like a heavily laden touring bike, and moreso when riding with a passenger.

But the worst part is, it attracted undesireable or questionable sorts to the sport of motorcycling.. riders who consider it too much effort to start their bikes with their foot!! Then they would say stuff, like you cant ride a bike without aircleaners!! or you cant ride any distance without rear shocks!!  :o (yeah right!!) . Or you cant ride a bike in the winter!!..What is this world coming to anyway... :o

If I want to use an electric starter.. I jump in a car...

I have to admit, kickstart is awesome.  Honestly, I almost prefer it to electric on these old school machines.  I still use electric though when I"m in a hurry, or the days where I just dont have the energy after my day is done to kick it.

Isn't the auto the standard Corvette gearbox now with the manual optional?  At least Dodge  still has it right for now.  The Viper doesn't offer an auto at all.   :)  I'm a big fan of Jeep Wranglers and it kills me everytime I see one with an auto.  There's a dealer near here with a bright red Rubicon Unlimited but it has the 4-speed auto.   :-\

At least they kept the kickstart along with the electric starter.  Even if you don't use it everytime, it's great to have a backup like that.  It's too bad cars don't have some kind of manual backup like that.

Sometimes kick starting just isn't feasible.. Like in the case of a high compression race type engine. I would rather wear out e start buttons then risk having my entire leg buggered up by the bike bitin back when i attempt to kick it over lol.

I got no problems with high compression bikes having an electric start.

But I do agree that street bikes without kick starters are just... wrong.  The guys I ride with a lot make fun of me because I make it a point to use my kickstarter instead of my electric starter.  A kicker simply adds another layer to the bike, and brings me closer to it.  An electric starter isolates the rider from the machine, whereas a kicker puts the rider in direct contact with the heart of the machine.

It has a lot to do with "soul" of motorcycles today (or the lack thereof...)

Those of you who swear for the bike kickstart, would you start your car with a handle, and once the engine starts, run inside to start your ride?

I only use the kickstart when the battery is weak, and thank Mr. Honda for that backup. When I want to make physical exercise I ride a bicycle instead of a motorbike.

That being said, many times I start the bike with the kickstart, but only when I know I'm getting looked at, and only when the bike is warm so I know it will start first kick. How cool is that?

I can def understand where you are coming from on that one man. Reason i brought up the high compression thing was to get away from people saying something about the lack of a kicker when my 550 is finished. However on the flip side i do have my triple for a kick start style bike along with the CB chopper when i start on that.

You guys are all Homo's. I laugh at faggy kick starters, and instead push start all my vehicles, including my BMWK1100LT, my Toyota Camry (that I run sans shock absorbers and air cleaner) my old Cox riding mower, and my chainsaw, and this computer too. Nuff said, now back to the Blue Oyster Bar with the lot of yers! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah, whole  I'm usually using the electric starter, I would like to have the "Good Old Kick Starter" there as a standby or as an option. My 80' CB750K doesn't have it at all! ::) On occasion, I ,might pop it over with the old kicker, if there's on there.

Well I got to admit, I have never owned a bike with electric only.. and dont have much desire to..

You can easily start a 750 with your hand on the kicker.. and a lot of Harleys as well..

People say what would you have for a new bike and I usually cant think of one that I really want.. except I been thinking of some of the Beemers lately.. no freaking kickers though!! :o

even my R 100RT had a kicker... and yes I had to use it a lot..

Back to the topic of the title of this thread, I blame Hollywood. All those bad boy biker movies created an image that never really existed. I grew up around real bikers and they are the best sort of people to know. They are helpful to strangers, trustworthy, and fun to party with. Nowadays, all you see is doctors and lawyers dressed in leather trying to live a biker movie. A friend's cousin once told me he was going to get a Harley. This guy was an accountant with no mechanical ability whatsoever. I asked him what he was going to do if his future shovelhead broke down on the side of the road. He said that other Harley riders would stop and fix it for him. The puss actually believed that once you own a Harley, all other Harley riders would come to your aid and take care of you no matter what! If you buy a bike so you can become a needy leech on the motorcycle world you are a PUSSY!

Terry you are an inspiration to all non-pussy bikers in the world! I just went out and push started my skidsteer in your honor ;D
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Quote from: Gordon
Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.

I agree. And furthermore who needs a front brake that just makes noise! That lever just clutters up the handlebars.

And auto-advance, too.  Whatever happened to the days when real men controlled the spark advance manually with a knob?  How many poofsters today even know what the hell spark advance is?

And synchro-transmissions?  Real men double-clutch and match revs.

And what's with these foam seats?  And shock absorbers?  And pneumatic tires?  Real men ride hard-tails with iron wheels.

Bunch of freakin' pansies....

On the first of my  3 Yamaha XS650's it got to the point where the electric starter didn't work because over 3 years I had never used it and it had froze up.

For sure, in my opioion it is a "real man bike" if you only kick start it.

Have had too many kids ask where the electic start button is on the CB125s etc etc.  ::)
