Figured out solo seat mounting on factory frame!
« on: January 10, 2008, 01:29:45 PM »
Ok here is a pic of how it will sit with the white line being the bracket.

Here is a 3d rendering that I made of the bracket.  Anyone wanna make this for me?  Also could this be made by bending some slightly thinner metal instead of welding 3 different pieces?  The top part is 6" long and it sits 2" high.  (After I look at the pic I am thinking maybe it should be inch and a half high) The bottom of the bracket is an inch and a half.  I do not know what thickness would be the best for this but was thinking no more than 1/4"

Here is a link to the pdf of the drawings and dimensions.

Is it going to flex when the seat is occupied?  Should the bracket also rest on the frame in front of the seat?

So there will be fasteners holding the back down?

Ya I am still going to be using the seat springs on the rear 2 bolts.   These are the springs I am going to use..

Do you have a photo of the rear mounting and springs?

I'm thinking that if the rear springs are functional, sitting in the seat will cause the front to droop on that bracket and the rear to lift and stretch the springs.

I thought about that but I figured with it being 1/4" thick it shouldnt flex too much, but I guess there will be quite a load on the front of that.  I guess I could go smaller metal and take it all the way to the front, then maybe I could make it myself.

I guess really I could turn that bracket around and it would be alright?  Just mount that bottom piece up by the tank and that would work too.

I'd suggest that.  It'll also be lighter that way.  Will it be visible when the bike is finished?

Ya that was the reason I was trying not to have it come out the front.  Bet I could put a couple sets of holes and try it both ways.  I am running by lowes when i get off to see what they may have.

Are there any existing holes in front of the seat that could be used to mount a bracket?

Since it's going to be visible, you could try making an arch.  That shape might blend better.

May also want to look at the seat hinges fab kevin makes for solo seats...might be close to what you're looking for with a bit of tweaking.

Bolt on version

Flank those are some really nice brackets.  May have to purchase one of those on the next bike I build.  They look a little too nice for this one.

Well went to lowes and bought a piece of about inch and 1/4 wide by 1/8" thick hot rolled steel and made myself a bracket last night with the torch and hammer.  Her is a pic of what it looks like.  I am going to do alittle more work to it with the grinder to make it look a little better but for 30 minutes worth of work I am not complaining.  The 3" seat springs are too big so I am going to order some 2" springs this week.

I love that curved strut action you got going on there! The seat looks pretty good too but imagine how good it would look with that $120 stainless front bracket hiding under it ;)

It would look too clean.   ;)   This one will work for the time being but I am going to do more to it in the future.  Now I just want it to run so I can run this beast and see what all the hype about all these old hondas.   ;D

I am betting if you weigh more that 150 lbs it will flatten out within 20 minutes..

and unless you put something thicker than that under it, it may put a hole in your battery..

I think they had a hinge on the front of sprung saddles for over a hundred tears for a reason..

There is hinge part that goes on the set on ebay for under 12.00 shipped.. just make the povot part for the front out of a chunk of aluminum.. if you have a drill and a hacksaw and file..
