i've struck black gold!!! texas tea!!!
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:58:06 PM »
okay, most of you remember me as the guy who owns the possibly stolen bike.  okay, i've fallen into a 74 cb500 frame with title for $30 (that's delivered).  i love ebay.

i'm switching everything on the bike.  the frame comes tomorrow.  meanwhile, the parts i've taken off are in my workshop (what my wife likes to call, the guest bedroom).

here are the main leaks i want to fix:

it looks like the top air breather cover is leaking, the tappet cover o-rings, and whatever that mid gasket is called.

also:

is that the head gasket leaking?  what about the seam where the halves of the crankcase meet?

i've been looking at buying this kit:
http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=2003
will this meet all of my leaking needs?

Possum,
That kit should have everything you need to fix your leaks except for the leak at the case half seam. You may want to leave that one alone,it requires splitting the case. It can be done since you have the engine out of the frame, but it is probably the most complicated part of the engine rebuild. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it might be just seeping over a long period of time and hasn't been cleaned for a while. Be assured that if you decide to tackle the cases, you will become very intimate with every working part of your engine. Someone will probably disagree, just my .02 cents.
By the way, I would advise against tearing into that engine on that white bedspread, but who knows, maybe your guests won't mind. ;)

those are cerani's and a home made triple. i have no idea what the guy was smoking when he thought of those. but, original cerani triples are harder to come by than an honest politician.
its actually a 65 scrambler.
and i'm throwing in a 66 250 monza engine.
parts parts everywhere parts.
at this point the ceranis are the most expensive thing on the bike.

as you can do everything except split the cases with the engine in the frame i would be tempted to steam clean the engine and then find out exactly where the leaks are.

Also not sure if that set includes the rubber pucks that cover some head nuts and go between the head and cam cover---As seen on many 750 posts
