goodmorning.  I've started rebuilding a cb750F.  I've been reading the manual and many links and comments.  the engine is out and I've started to disassemble the motor.  I've got two questioned.  first the pistons look bad.  Lots of black ash caked on them.  the motor has 44K on it and wasn't treated really well.  Should I replace the pistons? clean them?  also the piston housing? is it time for gunk? what's my next step?  BTW- my budget isn't really a problem but I'm not interested in building a rocket...good stock power is good enough.  I've got other bikes for hair raising stupidity :)

it's just carbon residue left from the combustion process. all engines have them and there's nothing worng with it. the carbon will clean right off by means of scrubbing, blasting, washing, etc. be sure to get it real clean. don't want loose carbon wandering around between ring grooves. there should be nothing worng with the piston unless there is noticeable deformations.

by the sounds of your question, you seem new to engine rebuilding. better take it one step at a time and be sure to look up and ask questions.

I'm brand new to engine rebuilding.  going super slow and trying to stay organized.  that seems to be the big challenge.  BTW - do you need to special tool to remove the clutch basket?  or will a screw driver and careful striking get it loose (once the washer is bent back)?

there is a special socket used for the purpose, only around 15 dollars from cyclex
