The UKs' HP sauce last year and now the Canadarm?  >:(  :'(

MDA selling Canadarm business to U.S. firm
Last Updated: Tuesday, January 8, 2008 | 8:02 PM ET
CBC News

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. is selling the division that developed the distinctive Canadarm space shuttle technology to a U.S. firm as part of a $1.325 billion cash deal.

Late Tuesday, Richmond, B.C.-based MDA said it had sold its information systems, satellite and space mission businesses to Alliant Techsystems of Edina, Minn.

The sale includes the division that developed the Canadarm robotic arm that is used on space shuttle missions and on the International Space Station. MDA acquired the Canadarm business from Spar Aerospace in 1999.

MDA said it will now focus exclusively on its faster-growing information products business, which serves the property market with specialized mapping products.

The operations being sold "will have greater growth potential under a complementary U.S. owner," said Daniel Friedman, MDA's president and CEO.

Alliant Techsystems is the world's largest producer of solid rocket motors and a main contractor on the first stage of NASA's next-generation ARES 1 rocket.

About 1,900 people — including 800 engineers — work at the MDA units that are being sold to Alliant. When the sale is completed, MDA will have about 1,100 remaining employees in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Alliant said it will incorporate the MDA assets into a new space systems group in April.

MDA said it will use most of the proceeds from the sale to invest in acquisitions to support its information products business.

Last June, the Wall Street Journal reported that MDA was thinking of selling its space division to a U.S. defence contractor. At the time, MDA denied that any talks were taking place.

The Journal reported that MDA management had long been frustrated by the difficulty of accessing the U.S. defence market. With U.S. owners, that will no longer be the case.

Shares of MDA slipped 15 cents to $42.51 on the TSX before trading was halted prior to the announcement.

Hey, bean counters, sales and marketing types need to feed their kids, too!  Just like PT Barnum. ;)

I agree with you, btw.

But, I always thought snap on tools were spectacularly over priced.  I have several of their screwdrivers where the handles have cracked from sitting in the tool box for too long (such abuse).  Of course, they'll replace them with those of similar, lesser, quality, if I can ever chase down one of those trucks.   ::)

And they'd still be better looking and more reliable than anything made in Britain, ha ha! Although I'd really like a 4WD Ford Sierra Sammy, can you send me one? (for free?)  ;D

Actually, I was watching "Thunder Races" last night on cable, and they chopped up another Sierra, which the bought at a breakers yard for 300 squid, and a BMW 318i in really nice nick for 500, it'd almost be worth my while to make a visit to the "Old Dart", ha ha! ;D

;D ;D  No worries 754, the Canadian designed and built Canadarm doesn't have the digits for that gesture. The 'hand' is actually a drum shaped device.

"The End Effector or mechanical hand of the SRMS allows the arm to capture stationary or free flying payloads by providing a large capture envelope (a cylinder 20.3 cm in diameter by 10 cm deep) and a mechanism/structure capable of soft docking and rigidizing. This action is accomplished by a two stage mechanism in the End Effector which closes three cables (like a snare) around a grapple probe (knobbed pin) bolted onto the payload and then draws it into the device until close contact is established and a load of approximately 499 kg is imparted to the grapple"

We will probably have the last laugh though as wily Canadarm Industries of Prince George are now offering different sizes of Canadarms for various markets. If our neighbors need more help with their projects we will sell all these too.

Well,  I see that Cannondale, the highly esteemed Bethel, Conn. based bicycle manufacturer, has been bought by Dorel Industries out of Montreal. You 'South Canadians' had better pick up the pace :D

Don't go back real often, though that could change, Mom's getting older and
the wife still has family there. Parkway sounds like a plan. Maybe we can drag
Ernie out, he's in Asheville.  ;D ;D ;D

...yep, hes on my list once I get up there and get settled in...wife doesn't start until the fall, so we got some time to enjoy the warm weather here in the deep south before moving to the frigid north.  Oh well, cold mountain temps just bolster my argument for fully equipped shop...  8)
