Fell into this the other day when I said to a friend I needed a break from the Island.
Watch out what you say to friends.

I'm flying out of Victoria tomorrow to Seattle to crew a boat back to Gabriola. 38ft single diesel trawler. The only problem is this boat sank a month ago

The boats engine has been flushed, and all the important electrical have been replaced. My friend can't make it now,"no passport", and I am now the only crew this guy has. Don't really know the owner, and now I've committed 3 maybe 4 days alone with him. Should be something to change up my week a bit

AAh bringing a boat back to port. I hope she's all sealed up good, as I'm sure you know there's little margin for error on the seas.

The sinking was caused by previous owners having a dead battery. Did not throw out an anchor and they ended up on a mud flat at low tide. Tide came up with the boat on its side....filled er up. No damage to hull

Still, a lot of things can go wrong in 3 days $:-\$

BTW, you have seen the movie 'Yellow Dog: Long Way From Home', right? You know, the one about the kid from the Island who gets shipwrecked with his dad and dog (Yellow Lab) while taking a short, simple trip down the coast of Vancouver Island for supplies? No? Oh, well maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it. Don't bother, it is a sappy, corny movie anyway...

CCCCCCCcold!!!!!!! No electrics, no heat........below freezing both nights. I'm so spoiled at home

Locks are cool. My son and I did The Trent/Severn Waterway a few years ago. Lots of locks. Different kinds of locks,too.

As a kid, my friends and I rode our bikes (bicycles) down to those locks (Ballard)
several times a week in the summer. Watched boats coming and going.
Very exciting stuff.

Looks like you had a good time! Never been on the ocean in a boat but have travelled the Trent Many times and lots of times on boats of similar size around the Great lakes (primarily when I was diving quite a bit!).

Never been out in the ocean, sounds like quite an adventure. I'm very leary of large bodies of water after getting caught in a very bad storm on Lake Michigan once back in 1973. The Coast Guard said if we went down they would come out, but as long as we were still afloat they couldn 't do anything. we were bailling water with buckets. Had 6 to 8 foot waves coming over the boat. I was scared Sh!?less. No more big lakes for me now.

If that happens again, tell them someone aboard is sick and they have to come out.

Yes, our locks have gates not doors

Day 1: Running at 7-8 knots it was 8 hour run from start of day 1 to Port Angles
Day 2: Port Angeles to Gabriola 7-8 knots 13 1/2 hours.

Lots of navigation required on this coast. Not for the faint of hart or un-trained boat handler.
We lucked out with good sunny weather, great visibility across the wide straights and calm water for the most part. You can see glass water in the last few photos. We were the only ones on the ocean it seemed, and the wake went for miles on the water without any other waves or ripples.

Built in 78 in Taiwan similar to a Grand Banks made in Hong Kong.
I think this one was called a Hershberger?

Back in the 70s guys were going over to Asia and hiring a shipyard to build boats for West Coast sales.
Beautiful teak interiors and nice glass hulls.
