camshaft regrind!
« on: January 09, 2008, 11:00:17 AM »
i have a cb650 that i am currently but slowly turning into a cafe racer and am i the process of looking at the modifications possible to the engine. i am in th uk and have found a place that can regrind my cam for £98 +vat, but what exactly do they do? and do they add any material to the cam or is that at an extra cost? also what sort of hp gains would i expext to gain?

I had the cam to my 350F reground back in the '80's.  What they do is add material by welding then grind and reharden the lobes.  I can't remember how much it cost but it was one price.  No extras.

As far as gains in hp, that depends on the specs.  I was given some choices and selected a mild-hot street config.

did the regrind you had done make much difference to the bike? did it make it idle rough or anything?

It did not effect the idle that I could tell except added a nice sound to it.  It did gain hp in the 8,000 to 11,000 rpm range as I recall.  Along with the cam I also opened up the pipes (custom 4-to-1) the air intake system and adjusted the carbs.  Like I said, I did this back in the '80's and have maybe riden the bike 500 miles since then and am still not done experimenting with the intake modifications.  Look for a full report when I complete it.

Daniel my son, only 9 post since the 5th June  :( you're letting the UK down ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Like has been said, some cam re-workers just grind the base circle, (the area of the cam that don't lift) this gives you more lift as this is the area that you set your tappets against.
Others might also build extra metal onto the working end of the cam and then regrind, this alters the profile of the cam and will dictate when it opens and closes the valves and the duration of that opening.
Performance cams only realy work well when the cylinder head has been ported.
You need to tell the guy who is doing the work what other mods you intend doing and also the reason for wanting the extra power (road racing, drag racing or street racing  ::) ) Who is doing the work for you ?

Welcome to the forum (6 months later :D :D)

Regards from the very wet NW.

The only thing I'd add is there is a big difference in price between a straight regrind and a hardweld cam.

well i havent been posting much since i have been out riding for a change and not fixing. but now the insurance has run out and it smokes at idle iv decided to strip the engine down and replace the valve stem oil seals and rings. so while the camshaft is out i was looking at getting it reprofiled. well i rang the place but the guy i had to speak to wasnt there so i have gott to ring back on mon, so i will ask what they actually do.
i have also got a straight through pipe on it at the moment, its rather loud, and am looking at putting on some k&n filters and upjetting. i have also e-mailed somebody about porting and polishing the head. samcr750, is there anywhere in the uk you would recommend to do the head work and the cam, i had rung kent cams about the cam.
i didnt ask how much for a hardweld cam on mon.
thanks for the info everyone.

Hey Dan,
Ill second Sams recommendation on sending your cam and head to Mike Rieck - Ive been in both the Uk (Scotland, Oxford, London) and now in Boston and can still say that Mike will do the best work on your head. Further testament to this is the fact that other UK SOHC members (Bryanj, CrispyDuck etc etc) have sent their heads to Mike. And since the pound is twice the dollar you are going to get a bargain for the money spent!

Cheers
Andy

Right, and I think the price this guy quoted, it is a small base circle regrind which works great on these motors.

Web can do it.

sam- the blanks for the 550 and 650 cams are the same, so their profiles listed for the 550 cam would work fine so long as someone know what kind of profile they want.

mike did an incredible job on my 650 head:

i don't remember what the price breakdown was, but mike did a port and polish, had the exhaust seats re-cut on a serdi machine, and installed kibblewhite HD valve springs in reassembly. i don't know what his price list looks like, but he was quite fair with me.

A close cousin of mine(with money) had a heavily built Kawasaki 500 MC. It was the just about the scariest thing I ever threw a leg over. I think it had like 75HP. It was friggin explosive and just about unridable.

yeah big 2stroke m/cycles were fast, real fast and had an explosive powerband...but boy were they an adrenalin rush...i could never get used to the kick start being on the left on the maico...

i don't necessarily recommend it, but i managed to fit my 650 head in a USPS flat-rate box and mailed it to him for $8. i just wrapped it in bubble wrap and crammed it in. definitely a gamble if some postal worker decides to try and play football with your package though...

i dont think i will get my head to mike from th uk for $8, its more like £50!!
im definately going to send my head to mike, but as for the cam, people have recommended to send it to web or megacycle. is there anything to stop me getting my cam reground to the same specs as the meagacycle one for the 550 here in the uk to try and save any money??
