If you want your side covers to stay on, renew those rubber grommets in the frame. The old ones get hard and shrink from age, and do a poor job of holding the side cover pins. Seems counter intuitive, but new grommets also make the cover easier to install and remove without breaking, a still holds the covers on better in the wind due to their "stickyness" that old rubber looses.
Another factor in side cover loss, is the removal of the air plenum behind the carbs. This normally blocks air flow to the back of the side cover. Filter pods do not.

Got 5 bikes, but only one of them is a Honda CB 500 four, it is a K1 first registered in 1971. Had 2 when I was younger, one together with my brother. Love them, very sturdy bikes! So when I got the chance to buy a project from a German colleague, this is what I ended up with! (Picture in post with white seat and tank, have no other picture on this computer)

Maybe I'm breaking the rules, but I've never been much for rules anyhow. I don't own them anymore, but they rank as two of my fave bikes of all times and the two bikes I really learned stuff on.

I've got a cb550 and it's almost running. It's my first bike.

Here's a bad pic, but the best one I have and most current. Today actually, and the first time it has all it's parts since I got it in December '06. Test ride soon to come.
