I just picked up this 1978 CB550K about a month ago. Her name is 'Vern'

Did most of the work at my buddies motorcycle shop getting it back running after it had been sitting in some guys garage since '96.
19k original miles. Other then new tires, cables, oil all I put into the bike to get it running is new needle valves and the Dyna-S. Still needs a sync though, waiting on motion-pro shipment to the shop.
Tank is dent-less and damn near rust free inside, but the clear coat is a mess... all chipping away

. But on the upside the side covers are in awesome condition. Pipes WERE fine, but the side-stand got loose and swings up and hit the bottom of one of the cans and repeated trauma lead to a hole in the bottom. Ill have to weld that up soon.

Runs great and couldn't be happier with my first bike! I am torn on what to do with it though... a full restore, or a mild cafe build.

Sweet find Celco!! And welcome to the forum! Having a buddy that knows how to wrench a bike is an invaluable thing!! Not the least of which is he/she can point out those subtle flaws that can turn deadly at speed.

As for what to do, I'd say wrench it, ride it and love it. Use it to learn all there is to learn about a SOHC/4 (a never ending pursuit by the way). Then, when the inner builder in you needs to express itself, go find $200 rat bike with a title and cut that up. This bike is TOO NICE to not restore! And such fine examples are getting rare. Just my opinion.

hey celco, welcome and good work.

when i bought my bike i was revved up to cafe it. changed my mind after riding it and now plan upgrades but keeping mostly stockish. so i guess i'm saying don't feel in a rush to decide... especially if you're on the fence about it.

Ecosse, not that I am rushing into anything just yet. Most of my major work Ill be doing more winterish time so there is less downtime of riding now

. If I didn't have a good selection of tools I would just keep stock, but I am grouping up with a few buddies that are making a hotrod shop complete with any kind of metal working tools and welders you could need... That is my main push to get something going on my bike. But at the same time I dont really want to be putting 1000's of dollars into the machine either. We shall see, still looking around at pictures of other bikes for motivation right now.

Here is my 71 CB500 it had been in the back of a barn since the early 1980's. I have been working on it since january and required a fair amount of work to get on the road, new ignition coil and wires, new clutch and cable, front brake lines + caliper and master cylinder rebuild. It also had a pair of ape hangers on i that I ended up replacing. She's not great looking but she runs good and I just got plates on her yesterday and took her for a 30 miles run down a 2 lane highway here in Missouri.

hey jacoby, you may have higher priorities, and i don't know if you plan on keeping the fairing, but hondaman suggests in his famous tips list to tap the fork tops for pressurized air. that, and rebuilding the forks with thicker oil and/or stiffer springs are some ways i think people compensate for fairing weight.

just tossing it out there. like the color btw.

"The springs on the stock 500/550 were very soft, too soft for spirited riding, and they sagged quickly. Get 100 lb springs for the rear when you replace the shocks, and shim the front springs inside the fork tubes with at least 3 washers of the diameter that fits the tubes inside. Then add air valves to the caps to make air forks out of them: run 10 PSI without a fairing, 15 or so with a fairing. "

new to the site. just got a 1978 550k from the slaveage yard for $200.00 complete bike motor not frozen. a lot of clean up and will do a full restore on the bike. iam glad i found this site. hope to get a lot of info from this site as i restore the bike.

Hey Ecosee, thanks for the tip, I do plan on keeping the fairing for a little while as i don't have stock blinkers or headlight yet, but i do have plans to return it to stock(stock-ish atleast). This is my first street bike, and the fairing ways only 15 pounds maybe- will that have an adverse effect on the handling with stock suspension? Thanks

I have and have had Vetters on several bikes. They are just not very heavy unless you fill up the compartments with...stuff. They do catch some side winds that make the bike blow around more. I think it actually improved my MPG, as I feel a lot of wind pressure on my back while riding. They certainly lower the rider fatigue factor on longer rides, particularly on the freeway.

I did up the viscosity of the fork oil to 10wt.

Had one on my 72 CB750 and it was a great thing to have in the summer at night.. Kept the bugs off my face.. Also it does help with fatigue on long trips.

1974 CB500 - registered as '74 but has a '71 engine number. May have taken a few years to get down here to Australia...?
Has about 25k miles on the clock.

I bought it about 6 weeks ago and have since added Hondaman ignition, new seat cover and new TT100's. It runs beautifully and keeps me on my toes with a few little niggles here and there. It's my first road bike so I am learning as I go.
Am yet to take it out on a long ride but once the weather fines up I will be out and about. I might even take a better photo!!
