It runs better
« on: July 29, 2005, 11:03:49 PM »
I turned my Pilot screws out about another 1/4 turn and the thing started to idle with no choke!!! I still think it may be a little lean but I need to do some plug reading.

next is on to adjusting my clanking tappets. ???

I would just like to thank everyone who helped me with all the porblems I had in getting my 1978 CB750K8 on the road.

A special thank you to twotired.

oohh boy you is doing it in the WRONG order!!!!!! FIRST do tappets, SECOND get points gap AND static timing PERFECT, THIRD get cam chain perfect, THEN when all thats done start playing with carb settings.

I guess I would adjust cam chain first. Make sure it is tight otherwise when you turn the crank to adjust the valves, they might not position correctly.

I have no points cause I have the Dyna S, 3 ohm Dyna coils and dw 800 wires so all the antique procedures that go along with them are gone. Yes it is timed right.

I can I already checked/adjusted the cam chain.

Well I suppose that always helps now doesnt it!
Did you make sure the adjuster actually moves? Mine had gummed up and would not move at al. This has happened to another person on this forum. Just something to make sure of, thats all.

All ok so far BUT just a small variation on a valve gap makes a difference to th carb vacuum! Thats why you should do the tappets first

I was waiting for the tappet tool to do the job then said to hell with it and was just going to use the go - no go method with the feeler gauges. I removed the fuel tank and then removed all the tappet covers. I new the tappets needed adjusting but what I found amased me. The lock nut from the intake on the  3ed carb was gone!

Now the bike ran pretty good and it did make a little noise but...
As far as I can tell it is not in the valve cover. I have ran the bike for about a half an hour and drove it about 3 block lengths. I looked the best I could with a flach light in the holes. I am fairly sure the P.O. forgot to put it on. Kghost said it could have made it down the cam chain to the oil pan...I guess I'll take the pan off and check. And Kghost is donating a new lock nut and screw. Thanks again Kghost, you'll eat and drink well when you get down my way!

Anyway I adjusted all the valves (the ones that I have) with feeler gauges. It took a little practice but after I got the fell (no pun intended) for it, it went great.
