I don't know how many of y'all are or were ever Johnny Cash fans,
but his version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" is great.
Johnny did some great stuff in his last days.

Wish there was someway to share the song on here but
limeware can get it for those interested.

It's nice to see another Cash fan out there.  I have to say he is one of my all time favorite artists.  I have a pretty big collection of his work on vinyl and some day I will have it all...  ;D

I was even able to see him live when he played in Portland Oregon.  It was one of the coolest experiences.  I have never seen such an eclectic group of people all in one place.  There were even some crazy goths there dressed in vinyl grooving to The Man In Black.

Cash is okay.  Some of his stuff is great, some I find to be best left for his true fans.

They guys I like who live a hard life are the boys from Rancid.

I've been a Johnny Cash fan for as long as I can remember.  I remember as a very little kid watching the reruns of his variety show with my family and trying to do my best Johnny impression.  When I was 10 my family went to Jamaica for Christmas break, and at one point we stopped in at a small grocery store and Johnny Cash was there.  We all got to meet him and shake his hand.

One of the first albums I bought for myself was Live at Folsom Prison.  What a great choice.

I like his rendition of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" even better than the original.

Too bad it was recorded so hot and his vocals distort the microphone :-\

I remember years ago, whilst working in a coal fired power plant
during a power outage which included 32 hours straight,
spending the last 8 hours or so singing "ring of fire".

I don't own that last album, American IV, The Man Comes Around,

but having downloaded "Hurt" and the other songs I mention above in
the past, I'll be getting it my next trip to town.

Your right Dan, JC's "Hurt" is better than Nine Inch Nails.
His version of, Rusty Cage is better than soundgardens,
"God is Gonna Cut you down" is awesome.
His version of "I Hung My Head" is better than Stings.......

Yea, I like Cash's music, old on up till the last.
Who else has had a career that spans that long of time frame in
the music business?

I was privileged to see his '94 performance at Glastonbury 8)

I didn't know much about him beforehand and only went to that performance because my mate dragged me along.  I@ll be eternally grateful to him for dragging me out of my tent that day ;D

I'm only 19, but Johnny Cash is one of my favorite musicians ever.
I remember he died not more than 3 days after my grandmother, and I'd walked into a mcdonalds to get some breakfast on the way to the funeral,  asked the cashier if she knew the Great Man in Black had died, she was like who's that? couldnt believe that.

There are not many - Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, BB King, Etta James have had very long careers & all of these are fantastic.

Good list. Yea, Bob Dylan is up there with Cash. First concert ever I went to was BB King. I was 14 years old ;)

Oh Yes, Johnny Cash, who just happened to be Arkansas born.
Not much that I DON"T like, that he did. I'll tell you two though
that you hardly, if ever hear (and it's one of my favorites) is
"The Ballad Of A Teenage Queen"
& "Don't Take Your Guns To Town.

You could also add John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, Aretha Franklin, and Tony Bennett (who I also had the privilege of seeing at Glastonbury) to that list.

A John Mayall's Bluesbreakers gig was the first one I ever went to, ;D I don't remember much of it though, because it was approximately 6 weeks before I was born 8)

I was never much of a Johnny Cash fan, I was born and raised in a country town in the 1960's and was so sick of "Country and Western" music I thought my life was over until I heard Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" and "Speed King" for the first time,  but some of the stuff he did just before he died was really good, and the emotions and the "timber of age, and hard living" in his voice is amazing. My son made me listen to "Hurt" last night, and it was so good I listened to it three times, incredible! I'm starting to miss the old feller! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I got one for you Bill on "Don't Take your Guns to Town"

You ever heard Steve Earle's rendition of it.
and Steve Earle's "Tom Ames Prayer" while I'm mentioning Earle.

Cash's Version is great too!

Hey, I got to add, Cash's " The Last Gunfighter Ballad"

Really hard to name favorites.  One Piece At A Time, Oney, Rock Island Line, I've Been Everywhere, Delia's Gone, Big River, and the list goes on.  I think he got the best part in  The Highwayman too.  Too many good ones.  Some stinkers too.  The cover of I Won't Back Down doesn't do anything for me.

Sorry, I'm drawing blanks here. You see, I was mostly "rock & roll from the 50's til about the mid 60's and when (what some of us called) "psychedelic music' hit, I started going more towards Country Western music. Oh, there were some that I liked but, I don't recall even hearing of Steve Earle right off. What was is time period? I'll just have to try to check him out. Not that I'm questioning about how good he is (or was). BTW, if he came out around 67'-69', I was in Japan and was listening to a friends great collection of 50's Rock & Roll records and enjoying my 66' Cb72 Honda 250 Hawk, while getting ready to KISS the Ground when I was able to return to the U.S.

You could hear dusty roads and hard livin in Johnny's voice. Living in the NY Metro area we heard zero Country music. But we did hear Johnny Cash. Oh BTW his real name is not John. He was only given the two initials J.R. by his parents at birth. When he joined the Air Force they required he have a first name. He chose John.  My favorites are Sunday Morning Coming Down and the CD American Songs.

Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

He was played on the country stations in the 70's.

"Six Days on the Road"
"Guitar Town" this one was probably his biggest country hit.

Copperhead Road was from the 70's and his biggest rock hit I suppose.
They play it to death on Classic Rock stations today.

And if you like bluegrass be sure to check out Steve Earle's project album with the Del McCoury Band called "The Mountain"

I like most every song on that album, especially track #11, "Dixieland"!  ;)

(found a video of the song on YouTube... God I love the internet!  ;D)
