What is the worst Damage you did to a Honda Four.
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:50:09 PM »
The engine on the stand.. in the engine-stand thread.

It has at least 2 ft of cracks in the cases, there is 2 or more from dyno side main bearing.. one runs up the the base gasket!! then there is a crack from between the oil sender and cap for pressure guage over to the engine sprocket, which keeps going right int the oil pan area, I think a few other main bores have cracks too. The dyno and remnants of the dyno cover are in the pic too (dyno is on another stand behind motor and up) The dyno has a huge dent , it is pushed in about 1/2 inch, with a huge nick in it. That is from the crank of another 750!!

I think those cases are toast!!

snapped a primary chain in 3rd at WOT, WAY over-revved, bent valves, 1 broken rocker, snapped rod and a giant hole through the oil pan, crank cracked too.i was able to save the carbs and the clutches and thats about it. i learned a valuable lesson. with a big (890cc) motor dont use a stock primary chain AND dont buy used rods, no matter what brand they are.

Wow !!

I got a 750 rod in my shop that is broke in the middle, and then split like a fishtail, toward the big end!!

Had a chunk of about a 1/3 of a piston with ring remnants stuck in it, came out of a buddys Suzuki!! He was in the middle  or in the fast lane of a multi lane freeway...and had to get over fast to the shoulder,,lots of smoke!!

Funny my motor that I finally blew up and his were built  at the same time.. his only went a few years.. mine went fourever!!

In 1979, I was returning from a camping holiday in Cornwall (on the bike in my avatar). The engine rattled, but it always had and I ignored it for about 300 miles.

Close to home (luckily) the engine got tighter and tighter and required full throttle just to keep rolling.

It got me home - but at a cost.

The cam chain tensioner had broken, allowing the cam chain to wear away inside the tunnel, which filled the oil filter with aluminium, which operated the bypass valve, which pumped oil/aluminium around the engine, which seized the mains and big ends (and the cam but I didn't notice that at the time).

That was my first excursion into a 500/4 engine.

Well it isnt my CB 4s...but it was my V4. I laid it down last summer a couple times...first time was because of wet pavement and a loose throttle grip which when i thought i was giving it 1/4 throttle i was actually giving it closer to 1/2. This resulted in a smashed right front signal light broken brake lever, destroyed the right mirror, put another nick in the paint on the fuel tank, some scrapes on the exhaust can and engine cover, The second time was because a girl in a cavalier cut me off and i chose to put the bike on its side instead of hitting her this was in a parking lot so i wasnt going that fast..basically i came to a dead stop and couldnt keep the bike standing. This resulted in a mildly tweeked right rear tail light and the second broken brake lever of the season. Fortunitly...the CBs have avoided this mostly because...well one is just an engine block and the other is a basket case at this time lol.

I had an 80 year old from Morecambe pull out in front of me on my CB550 as I was going through a righthander down in Dorset once. He hit his brakes, I went to go in front and he panicked and pulled completely across the road and stopped with his front wheels against the kerb and his rear over the line. Needless to say I had one of those sky-earth-sky-EARTH! moments. Beautiful blue bike totalled, even took a chunk out of the engine! Forks, rim, tank, side cover etc.

It wasn't me.

My buddy S____ dumped about a half-gallon of 15% nitromethane model airplane fuel in the tank of his '81 Civic wagon. Darned thing would burn first-second-third and chirp fourth. For a couple of days.

It went straight to the scrapyard after that.

I hit a curb once under full braking after power evading a crazed cager attempting flatten me in a parking lot.
Bent forks, damaged seals, bent wheel rim, bent bars, broken turn signals, rashed engine guards and luggage rack.

Straightened the forks, wheel rim, and bars (12 ton presses can be quite handy), replaced the fork seals and turn sigs.  The guards and rack got polished and get a new coat of wax every 3 mos or so.

Oh, and the wrist and knees healed nicely. :)

Worst I did wasnt on my SOHC. but an 87 ZX1000 I once owned.   got it with a thrown rod, I got new rods, only put in the #3 and didnt do the proper rebuild I should have done to the motor.

it needed a new cylinder bank, all bearings, and the #3 rod when I got it, but being the idiot I was, I half assed it and put the #2 rod through the case.

When we did in the one I mentioned, the other bike hit it so hard that the engine case broke off around #4 rod..... and a guy named Howard C***** asked if Radar would sell him the rod bearing!!

He said no, and a few nights later it disappeared.. along with I think his sprockets!!..bastard..

The worst? Bought a brand new 1969 CB750 in summer of '69. Yes I'm that old. Had it for 5 weeks until a young lady blew through a stop sign in a Cotina. I T-Boned her at 30 miles per hour and destroyed the bike.   :'( I got a free ride ride directly to the hospital. Other than that I have disaasembled a couple of K's that were left to die a slow death.

Lets see....

Rebuilt my 550, snapped a ring and trashed a head gasket.  Rebuilt the 550 to 555, took it out to do a break in run and hit it to hot to quick causing a piston to freeze, trashed the rear tire (tyre).  Never opened her up to see the damage and that was about 9000 miles ago.

Started my sandcast recently and noticed a gallon of oil  under it after a few seconds....actually broke the oil filter housing. This is (was) the ultra-rare original smooth type that was recalled by Honda in 1969 and superceded w/ the common finned type because the smooth type cracked ez (no kidding). Only the 1st 2400 sandcasts came w/ the smooth. Unobtanium part.
I'm probably the last person that will ever do this, and the 1st in 38 years.

Can't recall any other CB750 major failures that weren't ez fixes after owning 38 different ones, many were daily riders. Knock on wood.

Rear ended my freinds Ford Fiesta on my 350F when an idiot pulled out in frount of him. We were both doing about 40mph.  When my freind felt me hit, he pulled away fast (the idiot had already left) so that I would not go through that big rear window.  The bike flipped, I hit the pavement face first (thank God for full face helmets) bent the forks, bent my back.  Replaced the upper fork tubes and seals.  It was nice to get the extra attention from the 2 girls that were with us. :) Years later when I decided to install tappered stearing barrings, I discovered that the lower triple clamp had been tweeked as well and so I replaced it.
