In 1979, I was returning from a camping holiday in Cornwall (on the bike in my avatar). The engine rattled, but it always had and I ignored it for about 300 miles.
Close to home (luckily) the engine got tighter and tighter and required full throttle just to keep rolling.
It got me home - but at a cost.
The cam chain tensioner had broken, allowing the cam chain to wear away inside the tunnel, which filled the oil filter with aluminium, which operated the bypass valve, which pumped oil/aluminium around the engine, which seized the mains and big ends (and the cam but I didn't notice that at the time).
That was my first excursion into a 500/4 engine.
