750K6 Transmission Problems
« on: July 28, 2005, 11:09:09 AM »
I searched the site but didn't find an answer to my problem.

I have a '76 750 K.  I have owned it about a year and it didn't have second gear when I got it.  Two months ago I decided to try fixing that problem.  First I replaced all the clutch disks.  That didn't work so I pulled the engine and tore it apart.  The top gear had all three dogs ripped off.  I replaced the parts that were no longer with in specs (according to clymer) with used parts that were.  I got it all put back together (with only one bolt and a couple lock washers left over).  Now I have NO gears.  The clutch lever will move up and down and get the neutral light to turn and off but it does not seem to be engaging any gears.  There is no grinding during this.  I tried adjusting the clutch.  According to the book, I loosen the lock nut and turn the screw until I feel a slight resistance.  I don't feel any resistance until the adjusting screw is too deep to put the locknut back on.

This is my first tranny work.  Can someone point me in the direction to try next?  Do I need to replace something else?  I'll try about anything at this point but would like to try all my options before pulling the engine again.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

No clunk when playing with the foot pedal.  It will change out of neutral but doesn't feel like it is really going into any gears.  It is certainly not catching on any gears.

A couple of possibilities are that the dogs and forks are not adjusted correctly. You never know. Sometimes you have to triple check these things.

Second, when you replaced the clutch disks, if you did not put all the edges facing the same way, pressure would not be distributed properly and could cause the clutch to constantly slip. You may want to put in the old disks, all the same direction and see what happens.

Your selector is not rotating the the shift drum. Take the transmission cover off, install the gearshift lever and watch what's happening. I'm sure the shift drum is not rotating.

No but if the plates are not aligned correctly it can cause problems as well. You can have a lot of slipage. SO it is always something to watch for. I would also think that if neutral can be found, then it would be a bad misadjustment.

Hiya. just wondering, were you trying this out with the engine running or at least turning the back wheel by hand? You need some movement to get the gears to engage. Otherwise, I'd definitely pull the cover off as MRieck suggests, so you can see that the mechanism is working ok, or not. As the neutral light goes out it indicates the drum is turning at least a little, but maybe not enough? Oh, what type was the leftover bolt... just wondering?

Cheers

something tells me that one bolt is the "critical gear engager selector" bolt.   ;D

well that would be my luck anyway  >:(

Thanks for all the replies.  I will look at everything suggested.

I played with it a little more on Saturday.  I took the clutch mechanism apart and everything looks good there.  There really isn't much too it.  I don't think the clutch plates are slipping.  I would really think you would hear something if they were.  One noise I noticed when playign with the pedal is that it will click when I pull it up or down and then seem to counter-click almost like it was trying to get into a gear and then dropping back out.  I will pull the transmission cover again and see if I can see anything odd there.

Thanks and I will post if I figure anything new out.

Rob

The left over bolt looked like an exterior bolt with the washer type head on it.  I can't see any empty holes for it anywhere though and there is no oil leaking.
