front chain sprocket wiggle?
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:42:58 AM »
the sprocket is a 15 tooth on a 630 chain,it has about a 1/8 freeplay wiggle to it,is that normal or should it have none? It only has one center bolt that i see on the sprocket,on the service manuals there is two bolts on the front sprocket, was that a change for that year?,my bike is a 78 750k,,thanks

Sprocket wiggle back and forth on shaft is OK.Two bolt mount is earlier method,it also allowed some movement of sprocket on shaft. What you do not want is play  between splines of sprocket and shaft.

Don't worry about it

Mine is a '78 too & that had me worried a few years ago

I checked into it extensively & that is the normal setup i.e. a bit of lateral movement

Put a drop of locktite on the bolt to be sure & ride on

I always 'thought' the lateral play was to accommodate/follow some lateral chain movement. Without it, if the sprocket were fixed, with no movement, I would think there would be excessive side plate and sprocket tooth wear. I could be wrong though, it's been known to happen, just ask my wife. ;)

I had the same play on my 78 SS after some research found that it is normal.
