Picked up a new bike today
« on: January 12, 2008, 01:15:11 PM »
'79 KZ650.
Quick bike. Rode it the 40 miles home.
Kerker exhaust, kinda rough cosmetically, but all there.
Very solid bike, stability wise.
Engine and carbs need to be gone through, idles high and stumbles at low rpm. Screams at high RPM.
Pictures coming soon.
Will let you know if it's faster than my K0 once I fix the K0 :/

Congrats!

Thanks.
Not bad for 500 smackers, considering I rode it home. New tires, new-ish battery, new ignition, new stator, too.
There is a fair bit of rust, tank will need to have a dent removed and painted. Electrics are a bit messy, and needs a new headlamp basket.

Still, not bad for a runner.

Just went through the carbs. they look ok. Havent worked on carbs with an accelerator pump before though.

Found it has dyna 3 ohm coils and a dyna-s ignition. Was happy about that. Lots of water in the master cylinder. Braided steel brake lines.

Gonna be a cool little bike.

Nice looking bike and I like the lines on the back end. What are you planning on doing with it?

Good deal!

Going to lose the back fender, bob the front fender, get a different seat, paint it silver with red pinstriping, put on drag bars, and get everything in good working order.
Then I'll ride it till I Sell it.

Have it mostly torn down. Have made a shopping list for replacement parts. Will take some pics, so we can see progress. You can see them, too. :)

Hey Mark, Kinda running behind on seeing your latest acquisition. Nice looking bike there, especially for the money. Looking forward to your progress to Sounds like you've got a plan of attack on it too. The 650 Kawas are pretty good runners and pretty good lookers too! 8) ;)

Where are you going for the carb parts?  I am into my elbows in a set of 79 kz650 carbs and having some trouble trying to find a kit that will fit.  Looks like yours is a better start than mine, mine needed the carbs gone through completely and new carb holders just to even think of it running.  Parts on order for most of it.  Anyways, I would be interested in seeing how it turns out when you are done.

Check that the bolt holding the bellcrank to the throttle shaft is tight.Idle problems could also be caused by a pinhole in the vacuum switch diaphragm.
Assume that the valves have never been shimmed and are way out of range; leave yourself a month for that job.
I love/hate mine; 150 psi per cylinder, goes like crazy, uses more oil than gas.
Now that I've discovered CB 350 twins...

Valves done.
aluminum bits polished.
oil and filter changed.
new head gasket.
Carbs rejetted, velocity stacks installed.
New throttle and clutch cable installed.
new 15/42 sprockets and chain installed.
Most bolts replaced with stainless allen bolts.
tach and speedo housing sand blasted and ready for paint
new drag bars installed.
Fork oil changed
everything lubed
aluminum bullet blinkers
New master cylinder
Fixed cam chain tensioner
Brakes rebuilt, steel braided lines

Left to do:

Bob front fender
Lose rear fender
Prep, Fill, Paint and pinstripe tank and bodywork, front fender and headlamp ears
Paint headers
Polish fork lowers
Clean up wheels
Paint various crap satin black
modify idiot lamp tree to something more svelte, polish aluminum
Find some mirrors I like?
Polish up muffler
New glass for speedo
Cut and upholster the seat
Ride the piss out of it

Things the bike came with:
New tires
Dyna S
Dyna 3ohm coils
dyna plug wires
Progressive suspension
K&N Filter (not being used)
4 into 1 exhaust

It's coming along nicely.

Paint will probably take the longest.

This one doesn't seem to burn any oil.
Haven't done a compression test, probably wont unless I see some anomalies.
I figured out the idle issue.
The battery was dead, and of course the generator doesn't make enough enough power under 2 grand to keep things running without a battery.

I've been looking at z1, but evidentially no one carries the kits for the pumper model 650.  Might have to find a set of non-pump carbs.  Hope that there isn't a performance issue between them.  Thanks for the advice.

I do believe the carbs are the same, but for the accel pump gaskets and diaphragms. Call up Z1, they'll be happy to help.

She Rides.

Well, took her out for her maiden ride yesterday.

Adjusted valves, synched carbs. Got the cam chain tensioner working correctly.
It's a great bike.
The mid range is positively fantastic.
The accel pump makes a world of difference over regular slide carbs, and still has the great feel of slide carbs over CV carbs.
What's been done and what it has:

I've gone one smaller tooth than stock on the countersprocket.
New chain and rear sprocket.
Valves adjusted.
Aluminum velocity stacks
22.5 pilot jets, 120 mains
4 into 1 exhaust
carbs synched
dyna s ignition
dyna 3.0 ohm coils
removed airbox
Removed centerstand
cut down rear fender
drag bars
progressive suspension all around
rebuilt brakes (with stainless hoses). This thing stops GREAT.
Dunlop tires.
New throttle and clutch cable (ditched the return cable)

I'm really impressed with this bike.
It's surefooted and powerful in many ways that other classic bikes aren't. The frame is, relatively speaking, very stiff.
It revs very quickly. Found myself saying '#$%*, I'm already at 10, I shoulda shifted half a second ago.'
It's still not as powerful at the top of the rev range is my cb750, but it really doesn't matter.
The shifter is really nice

All thats left is cosmetic crap. Start on that next weekend, I suppose.

If I'm not too busy riding it.

(yes, I know I need to shave.)

We are going to go with a dark silver metallic, with either dark red or white pinstripes.
Getting rid of the rear taillight  altogether, and using dual filament aluminum bullet blinkers to handle both turning and brake light.

Needs a new seat, obviously.

I'll be filling and painting the gauges, or we were thinking about a small, electronic instrument cluster.

Need to polish the front brake caliper (its' been stripped) and the tripple trees.

Wrapping the headers and cleaning up that can.

Clean up the engine a bit (already polished the valve cover.)
No.

Have fun -sounds like you are going to!

Andy, the orange paint is pretty thrashed, and the tank has some minor dents.
'Course, I could always paint it orange again.

Oh hells no, Marcus..

People, say hello to Marcus, they other owner of the kz650.

Smells bad, but a damned fine mechanic.

Thats his little ol' CB 350 in the picture.
As you can see, he looks a bit of a circus clown on it :P

Marcus, glad to see you on the board.
