Anyone on here from Alaska?
« on: January 12, 2008, 07:52:56 PM »
Well it looks like my little family is going to be moving back to Alaska Within the next six months and I'm curious if any CB owners are in the Anchorage Area?
Sound off if you are out there.

I farted and made my son cry.

According to the SOHC Group Frapper map, there is a member Phil Bumala in Wasilla, AK. It appears to be quite close to Anchorage.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I'm guessing 45 miles is just down the road to folks in Alaska. ;)

Pretty much, it takes about twelve hours of driving to get to the canadian border from anchorage and the next largest town is Fairbanks, thats a good 360 miles away.

Actually, Alaska is pretty small place if you are confined to the road system.  I lived there for 15 years and it got a little old riding to the same places all the time.

Very true, whereabouts did you live and what were you doing up there?

Anchorage area (Chugiak), Kotzebue, then down on the Kenai peninsula.  Worked for the gov't like a lot of people up there.

Sorry to hear that ;) I grew up in Kenai. I live in Anchorage 1/2 the year and the other 1/2 in sunny Prudhoe Bay :-\

I still get back occasionally.  One thing that changed is that they screwed up the Seward Highway on that stretch either side of the Hope turn-off.  It used to be 13 miles of nice curvy road.  It is all straightened out and widened now.  What a shame.

Yea that stretch sucks now but up the upside is the road to Hatchers pass has been paved all the way to the mine.

The downside is more people go up there now now that it is a park.  That was one of my favorite places.  I have lots of pictures from the good old days before they cleaned it up - late 70s, early 80s.  Back then hardly anybody went up there.

They didn't pave the road that goes in from the Willow side, did they?

Better roads=more people definitely a draw back. I think it's only paved to the mine which you have to pay $10 to park at now >:(, no time for parking anyway. The state is definitely bending tourist and locals over all over the place. You have to pay $15 to park down at the Kenai beach and the only thing the city did down there was to put up a little shack to take your $. I guess the city figured they may as well make $$$ off of the local dip netters.

Alaska isn’t what it used to be, kinda sad there are more outta staters than 574s'.

The thing about Alaska is that if you can get to it by road, and it has some appeal, then somebody wants to make a buck from it.  For example, you used to be able to drive to Portage Lake, just park and look at the glacier and icebergs and hike around.  Now there's a big concrete visitor's center and boat ramp that are blights on the landscape.  There's lot's of other examples.  Too bad.

Bottom line...$.

Tourism is Alaska’s only money maker. Unfortunately over half the money made off of tourism is spent out of state because most of the people working in the tourism industry live out of state.

Man your bumn’ me out. I’m going to have to do a 2 a.m. buzz buy on my 2stroke by all the out of state RVs parked out in the wall mart parking lot just to make myself feel better ;D
